Default rod eyes

Hello my friends, im replacing the snake eyes on a favourite rod and it seems that the original eyes on the centre section are wrongly placed in relation to the spine. How do you determine the spine on the stiffer sections of a 3 or 4 piece rod. Also could somebody suggest a good rod building site as some of them are full of wind and urine!
Thanks Jemo

You may not be aware but some builders, even some volume manufacturers, ignore the spine and simply align the rings (Americans call them 'eyes') to ensure the blank is in its straightest orientation as many blanks have some element of deviation in them.

As Stated many go for orientation rather than spine, seems to work fine.I would be interested to hear from Steve Parton and David Norwich.Rodbuilders.

Me , I'm an orientation buff .

This is because customers don't understand spine , can't cast etc etc etc - the one thing they all do is assemble a rod and look up it - and they can all tell what a straight line looks like !

Try selling a properly spined rod with the tip a couple of inches out of apparent line - it won't happen .

And the problem with old cane is that it can take a set - the rod may well have been correctly assembled originally - but if there's been wet penetration/ glue breakdown in the passing years - it may well not even be worth rebuilding !

Happy new year and Good Luck

so do you recommend going for the spine even if it is slightly off straight.

Also do you put your ring on the soft or stiff side of the rod, If your bend the rod it will sit in one position bent more than the rest do yoou put them on the inside or outside of the curve

Thanks
AL

I tend to go with the spine orientation method instead of straight looking.

For me a rod is a dynamic item designed to cast a line and not something you use for drawing very long straight lines on a piece of paper If it looks slightly off when its built, then so be it though if the blank has a significant bend I wont use it.

I want to give the caster every chance of putting the fly on the target and however small the improvement may be with spine alignment, I think its worth doing.

That said, the original question was about the lower stiffer sections and my view is that the stiffer the section, the less spine orientation will be a factor.

Happy New Year to everyone.....except the ****** who won't fix my website till next week.

Hi Jim,

Guides on the preferred plane of bending of the blank. I.E. when the blanks is bent, it is the side each section turns to naturally. Line them all up and the rod will track through the casting arc like it is on rails.

Regards,

David.
