Default Tackle Advice

Right, The time has come to buy some of myown tackle. But looking round im just not sure what too get.

Im want a rod, a reel and some line, a floater and an intermediate i think. (never used sinkin yet so im not fussed out it!)

Im mainly going to fish resevoirs and small still waters for trout, but i'll also take it down my lake for some carp now and then!

First problem, what weight to get, ive been looking a 7-8 weigh rods as this is wha my dads is, but would i be alright with a 6/7 weight? I do want to be able to get it out quite far though...

As i understand their isnt much need for an expensive reel as all it does is store the line.

I thought this rod seemed perfect but they dont have the 7/8 weight left! thats what making me think of having a 6/7 weight. Although then i wont be able to use any of my dads lines on my rod will i?
AIRFLO DELTA XT FLY ROD 8' #4/5 RRP £59.99 9' 6/7# on eBay (end time 26-Jan-11 15:06:24 GMT)

I was also looking at these as they seem to go quite cheap but i dont know if their any good... Flextec CRX88 Trout Fly Fishing Rod 11ft 7/8 Rrp £149 on eBay (end time 01-Jan-11 19:44:57 GMT)

I havent looked into reels yet but i looked at this line which seeemed good... New Airflo Ridge Pure Delta Clear Fly Line on eBay (end time 24-Jan-11 10:16:55 GMT)

Or ive just found this:

Airflo Sixth Sense Fly Line on eBay (end time 22-Jan-11 17:44:02 GMT)

I need to ask my dad what taper his line is though, or what would you recomend?

Im looking to spend as little as possible but i dont want to buy junk!

Thanks for reading this and thank you in advance for any help

Hi There

If starting out you could do lots worse than a Shakespeare odessy 9' #6/7 or longer if you must. Great rod cheap as chips, once you find out what you like Upgrade

There are tons of dirt cheap reels that will do the job

Id learn how to fish a floating line and cast properly before going intermediate .......... Winter on small waters floating line and a long tapered leader is all i use ..........

I agree with Englander. Floating line to start, every time. want to fish deeper? leave the fly to sink longer and slow your retrieve.

Shakey Odyssey is a superb rod at a bargain price.

Reels are not simply 'line holders', but as a beginner there's no need to spend a lot on one. try a pflueger trion, greys Grxi etc etc.

Im not really starting out anymore, i can cast and fish confidently with any line, i just havent needed to fish a sinker as of yet and if it was needed i could use my dads, ive been fly fishing for a couple of years now aswell, i justwant to get some of my own tackle rather than using my dads

Sorry if it was un-clear

Cheers

I'm also with the rest on the Shakespear rod, John Norris have them on silly money at the moment but be quick, they wont be there for long something like £15.00 or so.

Cheers

Since you can cast and know the feel of a fly rod I'd strongly recommend that you find a retailer where you can try a few different rods out. This will inevitably be a bit more expensive in the short term but will certainly beat buying a rod 'blind'. There are certain rods that get very favourable reviews on here (Greys GRX line for example) which help to narrow down the choice a bit but there is really no substitute for trying before you buy.

Agreeing with BillyC. John Norris have the Shakespeare Trions on offer with a free floating line (their brand, not mill ends) thrown in. The RRP for the line is £19 so you get a rod for around £10-£20. I got 3 different sizes of the Trions and love them.
The Odyssey is also on offer. I got the travelling version. Great value.
They also had some reels at silly money, but I think they have sold out.
