Jim is correct. DNA wise there's not a whit's bit of difference. Some ocean connected river Rainbows just 'desire' to take a 2-3 year side trip into the North Pacific Ocean. Steelhead will usually spend 1.5 to 2 years in their natal river then migrate to the Ocean.

Edit: Isn't a 'sea trout' part of the Brown Trout family of fish?

frankthesurf..

A sea trout (what we call them in the uk) is what the americans call a 'steelhead'

And i dont have the time to check this out now but i'm sure that here in the uk, a sea trout is a sea run brown trout, like fredaevans suggested. I might be very wrong but that is what i've always thought....

Just had my senses return.

3lbgrayling is right. A steelhead is a sea run Rainbow Trout. And a sea trout is a sea run Brown Trout.

A Seatrout in America is a Sea fish, sometimes called a speckled Sea trout.A very popular sportfish.

But in the UK. A Seatrout is a Sea run brown trout. I have caught Steelhead in Britain.Allbeit they were just Sea run Rainbows. They did fit the profile.
