Default Where to find dark Bucktails?

Hello everyone!

I am Christof from Finland, a new member on this forum . I registerated here to find help to a problem for which I haven't found a solution from Finnish forums. I hope here can I find one, since here are so many more people from many countries. My problem is this: I would need some dark colored Bucktails for night flies. These colors are hard to find in Finland atleast... But I know these colors have been manufactured at some point so they should be awailable somewhere.

If anyone knows any European (or American) online shop where I can find them, (always better if both can be bought from the same place) I would be VERY glad and thankful!! The colors I need are:

dark olive:

SWE Premium Bucktail (Dark Olive)

dark red (carmine red)

Merry Christmas to everyone! :-)

Welcome to the forum,

I became a materials dying person for the reasons you are stating. (having trouble finding colors) Blending dyes to attain colors you want is not difficult and the results are rewarding. Dyes available at fabric stores will work but getting some colors the way you want them sometimes requires blending dyes to obtain those tones you seek.

If you choose to go the do it yourself route just post any questions you have here and someone will answer them. The good news is that you buy plain white buck tails and that is easy.

Thank you! Sounds good this do-it-yourself! Can you give me more specific informaton of the dying process? Do you just dip the bucktail wholly in a thin paint and let it stay there for how long? My problem is I don't have any space for dying, since all the chemicals would need an own room with good air conditioning. I also put email to the shop given above. Hope they answer too. Thanks for all help .

Hi Papu and welcome to the forums.
Here is a great step by step from one of the members, Midlander. This will give you a good understanding of the process. A basic step by step for dyeing fly tying materials.
You don't need any extra space or any thing special (one stainless pot). The smell is not an issue, no worse than cooking ethnic foods! You can purchase Acid Dyes from Jacquard or Veniard, $3.55 to $7 per colour. Don't be scared, just be neat and careful, especially if your married

Thanks everyone for the help! I have found a couple options where to possibly buy the bucktails and ofcourse learned how to dye them myself! Thanks for good sharing of knowledge. I am looking for dark bucktails for salmon and seatroutflies. These two colors are very effective in the night, others being black and white. I also have some phosphorous flies made of phosphoring mylar which too are very effective for the salmon hiding in the deep pools, sometimes too effective . Very ugly fly but also very effective. If someone wants a recipe of this fly i can send one here. I only tie it as a tubefly.

Okay I tie some of those flies this evening and post a step-by-step recipe with pictures here. Since it is phosphorous, it needs good lighting every third cast with a headlamp or similar. Thats why it is so effective, the salmon and trout go crazy about the light .
