Default Import Tax

Know we have had this before but can't remember the formula or even know if the situation has changed.

Ordered a couple of capes from our friends in the US totalling $105.00 they intend to ship at $8.00 including some insurance.

Would anybody be kind enough to let me know how much I would be expect to pay in import duties.

Obviously there maybe a fluctuation in the $/£.

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure about the import duties official maths but I have been hit by this before and it has been V.A.T. plus a £20(ish)fee from parcel force. I recently bought something else from the states and did not get stung. Of about 10 items over two year purchased from the states I have only been hit 3 times so I think it is just random checks that will make you have to pay.

Thanks gentlemen

Didn't realise there was a site for this.

As far as my own history of dealing with the US is concerned I have not been so lucky in that everything I have purchased has been taxed before!

Thanks again

I have ordered several times in the past and the only time I had extras was for a rod. Mind you I think the holding ( blackmail )charge that parcel force is excessive and is basically a licence to print money.

I have only ben hit once and it was for a large power tool for work around £400 mark and I think the total for the charges all in was about £35.

Parcelforce fee is £8 or £13 (or thereabouts) not £20 depending on the mode they send the parcel (Express I think gets hit at the higher rate).
The duty (not VAT) gets ignored I believe if it is less than £10 from what I've read on HMC&E websites, but it's curious why some countries are exempt of this. I've bought lots from the US over the past few years over £135 value and not been charged Duty - only VAT, yet when I bought some lines from Japan recently I was stung with the extra Duty along with the VAT.
I guess it must be what agreements they have between the countries.

There's a couple of great retailers in the States that are happy to mark the value of the Rods,Reels etc down, reducing the VAT and import tax, or in my case, marked the goods as 'factory repaired rod', this way the rod is still insured for the rrp, but not classed as a new product. Drop me a pm if you want their contact details.

Nice to see that some has stated facts not a guess like £20.00. The maximum allowance for a gift was £38.00 the last time I checked it. If it's not a gift customs will take the whole cost into account, cost of item, packaging and postage will be used in the calculation. If you get lucky you may not have to pay anything.

I would like to point out that I did not say that I knew the exact calculation but thought it was VAT but that the £20 parcel force was accurate(ish). I have been charged this 3 times from the depot in Poole. If you check the parcel force site there is also a holding charge whilst an item is in customs of £5.50 if the item takes more than 10 days to clear customs with extra charges for additional time after that. Sorry for being a quid out from memory but it is £13.50 plus £5.50 for items that take more than 10 days to clear customs so £19 fee payable if you are unlucky and the calculator site seems to show VAT plus and import duty so it is a little more than I first said.
