Default Moon and sun

Here is a strange one!
I have lived and worked in countryside for most of my life, as such, I have a general awareness as to what goes on in the natural scheme of things.
Yesterday morning (22nd tuesday) on way to work, driving almost due west, noticed moon setting on horizon in west north west position! This was about 8.45 am.
Just to confuse me more, having joined main road, and turned east towards motorway, when I joined motorway, sun was rising above hills in south/south west position!
Now I have seen many, many dawns whilst wildfowling on shoreline, and never seen sunrise in this position, or moon setting in same position.
Is it just me, or has any one else noticed this strange situation.
By the way I live in Scotland.
Just before any one in southern hemisphere says is normal!
regards
bert

The sun was shining on the sea,
Shining with all his might:
He did his very best to make
The billows smooth and bright--
And this was odd, because it was
The middle of the night.

The moon was shining sulkily,
Because she thought the sun
Had got no business to be there
After the day was done--
"It's very rude of him," she said,
"To come and spoil the fun!"

It may have had something to do with the lunar eclipse the other day (Wednesday), quite something to see if you missed it.

Again like gary J i would say that there was a lunar eclipse, I think at around 7- 8am very low on the horizon for those able to see the horizon.

I watched the eclipse, it was impressive but lost it in a fog bank soon after full eclipse . Saw the sunrise it was in a normal position. Think your compass needs calibration

I just happen to have animated images of the sun's position relative to compass points on the horizon through the year (from University of Durham so location from a Durhamocentric viewpoint) The sun rises due east at the equinox and sets due west but at the winter solstice the position of the sunrise and sunset creep towards the south - guaranteed.

Winter Solstice

And this cracking animation shows the position of the midday sun as seen from Durham through the Year

All these images and explanations here

The moon's a bit more complicated due to it's short orbit.

Ahh the bright star in the sky it must be nearly christmas

I think your direction must be a little out but has been said it does move further south at this time of year hence the winter.

Great Graphics DB, I do like a good techy graphic!!!

Also need to bear in mind the topography, as low sun can hide itself behind hills and emerge later than the technical sunrise time, appearing at a point that is more southerly than a true sunrise position on a level surface (as seen at sea for example).
