Default Seals Fur

Something thats been puzzling me for a few days. Ive been tying flies for about two years now and dont think ive used anything other than substitute materials and rabbit for dubbing. I have also seen various videos over the internet about seals being killed. What i was wondering was whether its still legal to buy and sell 100% seals fur for fly tying purposes ? The reason im posting in the general section is that i believe its a general subject. Sorry if this has been covered before

Default Baby seal's fur

I posted on the subject, unfortunately the whole Baby Seal Fur thread was removed, by a then Admin member, when a rather enthusiastic seal clubber from Newfoundland, who subsequently joined as a 'Pro Member' got insulting and argumentative. So far it hasn't be re-instated for full discusion, which I think is a shame.

Mods - I have the links should you wish to clean the thread up for general view. It was a very informative, and some spent hours constructing pertinent arguments on the subject. I should add that I do not believe it advances PETA's case; certainly it was not anti-angling.

The European Parliament has legislated against importation of Harp Seal products, which includes baby fur.
The Canadian gov't appealed, matters dragged on, and everyone stocked up!

I appreciate the time youve took to reply mate, personally i dont think there is a need for it as there is plenty in the way of more substanible stocks of dubbing material. Just my view though, anymore ?

Sorry, I realised there was an impending ban on seals fur but is it now in force and does it affect seals fur for fly tying ?

I now buy angora goat fur. Takes dye very well, is cheap and the goat don't mind getting a clipping for summer. Tons of synthetic available and works great.
As to the seal debate... not going to touch that one

I don't know, having googled the legislation it appears that the sale of any imported seal product is banned in the EU. What is not clear (or more to the point what I couldn't find) was any legislation relating to the sale of any non imported seal products.
There is plenty in the Marine Bill about seal protection (in this country) but nothing I could find on the sale of British seal products. If I went down to the beach and combed a sackfull of fur out of dead seals washed up after a storm could I sell it???

These threads are a bit too provocative with strong views in either camp - think I'll sit this one out.

The question was whether it is still legal to sell seals fur for fly tying purposes - a question I had too since I had thought it was illegal but seals fur tends to be generally available. Hopefully, that is a question of fact, that needn't involve acrimony!

Selling Seal Fur is illegal here in the US, but not Canada. If you want some, not that hard to get a fly shop there to ship you some.
