Default River Urr, Nith, Cree, Bladnoch etc...

Right, it looks like i'm moving house to Castle douglas in Scotland in August. I'm just wondering, whats the prospects like on the surrounding rivers, especially the Urr.

I'm a Brown Trout fisherman really, but may have a dabble at sea trout.

Can anyone give me any hints, tips, info etc...???

Many Thanks

Dave

Nice part of the world you are moving to Dave. Excellent Salmon and Sea Trout in the Cree. If you want some cracking Brownies have a go on the River Minnoch, a tributary of the Cree. Tickets available from Galoway Guns and Tackle, Newton Stewart (£10 per day last time I fished) Salmon too but the Sea Trout seem to stick to the main river. Lots of other good sport to be had around here as I am sure others on the forum will tell you about.............birdsnest

I fished the upper Urr at the tail end of this season for Salmon. I was told by someone that should know, that there's very few trout because of the number of pike in the river. I did see a few pike while Salmon fishing. I don't know how abundant trout might be farther down the river.

Colin

I had a casting lesson on the Urr a few months back and was told by my instructor that it was a cracking trout river, but that very few people fished for them and that outside of the times when the salmon were running, you could virtually have the river to yourself.

Can't remember whose water we were on (Dalbeattie?) but it was very reasonably priced club water and only a few minutes outside Castle Douglas. (The ticket came from the tackle shop in Castle Douglas.)

A really lovely part of the world. I was very much taken with it, I have to say.

i've also seen that the lochs up there are supplemented with additional browns and/or rainbows. Are there any truly wild lochs up in that area?

Hi Dave, it all depends on how far you want to travel.

Some of the lochs will have a had a bit of stocking but some probably not for a while and there were never that many put in to really have an affect on the overall populations so I would still class them as wild. In the Galloway Forest Park you have places like loch Dee, Lillies Loch, Loch of the Lowes, the Black Loch and Loch Bradan.
Going the other way heading into the Borders you have Loch Skeen at the top of the Grey Mares Tail, St Mary's, Talla, Fruid and Camps Resevoir.

I am sure i have forgotten some.

Best plan would be to get up and join the Castle Douglas angling club who have a stretch of the Urr, then you should be able to gleen loads of info on fishing around the place.
