Default How to sort tungsten from brass

Right... my the depths of Winter have reached such despair that I am compelled to tackle a task I have been putting off for ages: namely sorting out the nest of rats that is my nymph box. The thing is, it is full of randomly scattered goldhead/beadhead nymphs, some of which are tungsten, some of which are not

Has anyone got a sensible way of working out which might be which?

Simples!

Find one you know is tungsten and the comparison with those that aren't is easy when you 'heft' them in your hand!.

Or maybe I find it simple because I'm sensitive?

Easy-peasy. I have a small plastic thing with a magnet on the end that came with a hook storage box. Brass will not stick to a magnet-tungsten will.

Chris.

Mate... I have missed your "simple" advice these past few months

Pure tungsten is only paramagnetic - So I'd not rely on that as a test.

Good question! I used to have the same problem with small leaded and un-leaded nymphs, so I took to tying the leaded ones with olive thread to distinguish them. Perhaps I should start doing something similar with these, just a tell tale sign in the tying, not enough to affect its effectiveness, but enough for me to tell them apart. I suppose if all else fails you could also drop them in a pint glass of water and watch the sink rates?

Paramagnetic? Paramagnetic leaves me discombobulated .

In my bead box there are tungsten and brass beads only. The magnet picks up the black ones but ignores the gold ones. .

Right - try rattling the bead about in your mouth against the back of your teeth. Try this with a bead that you know is tungsten and then with another that you know is brass to get the feel of the difference first. Difficult to describe, but you will see what I mean if you try it. The tungsten one has a much more solid "clatter" against your teeth. With tiny beads, tilt your head forward and take the bead back on your tongue and let it fall onto the back of your teeth to get a proper feel for it (oo-er!).

I stumbled on this a couple of months ago. Thought that they might taste different somehow - they don't, but I found out by accident that they feel very different against your teeth.

I'm not taking it - this really does work!

Mind how you go though - swallowed a tungsten bead doing this a month ago, blew off the following day and shot the cat dead.
