Default Centre Pin or Fly reel for Dapping?

Took delivery of a Damm 15' extendable rod (from a fellow forumite) for experiments on the Midland Rezzies (subject to boat partner's approval!) in the new year and am now accumulating further bits and pieces to go with the rod.
Wondering what reel to use? Any assistance would be more than welcome.
Thanks in advance.

My old books show silk blow lines for dapping on Allcock Aerial type reels mostly; the original 'large arbours'.

I am about a month ahead of you, Loopy. I am putting together a modest loch style outfit for ressie boat fishing and one of the lines is for dapping. The floss line does not look as if it needs a wide arbor or large diameter spool to prevent memory problems, I just loaded some backing and the floss line on to a spare spool for the Greys GLA 90 reel I bought. Further insight from more experienced and expert dappers welcome !

Floss line does not have a memory so LA is not necessary from that point of view. I use a similar rod for dapping although mine is a 17' version and my line is on an old Intrepid Rimfly however the advantage of using a centre pin will be a faster retrieval rate.

Remember to use just a short mono leader on it, a couple of feet will do. When I was dapping on a South Wales reservoir with live daddy long legs one interesting feature of the catch was a very high proportion of browns.

Any old reel will do.but it should be light.a rimfly is perfect. remember to knot the floss every 1' and in reality only 10-15' of floss is required.great fun. hooking fish.but poor fight after that as 15-17' of telescopic carbon really knocks the stuffings out of a 1lb brownie.not bad with Salmon though.
I'm thinking of using a 14' match rod,so I get a better feel for the fish.

Havent dapped for a few years but don't worry about the LA design, there's no memory in the floss part of the line. i prefer dapping with an old fashioned fly reel with a loud click as a fish takes line. i have an old Hardy Perfect for this. Seems more in keeping with this old fashioned, but great fun form of fishing.!

Oh Chris, I thought you was a real man!

Dapping is for people who can't fly fish

Surely on the midland res's your going to have to use dry flies patterns rather than real daddies or grasshoppers as that would be bait fishing. If so I reckon you'd have more fun fishing dries on a 10ft 5#.

If I haven't persuaded you against it then if you want to dap with me then your going to have to dress up like a gnome...as thats what dappers look like in my opinion!

Perfect ... except ... why does it need to be light? You're not going to be waving it about in the air, ie casting. Most of the time the rod butt will be or should be firmly resting on your thigh / groin.

True; buy only at a pinch.

A 4" salmon fly reel overlined with floss would be second to a big centre pin.

The Aerial type I refered to earlier was also the pike and salmon spinning reel of the past. The open spool and large arbour useful for allowing the silk line to dry quickly and not rotting on the spools smaller less well ventilated reels.

A 4" centre pin gives superb feel and direct contact when playing a large fish on non stretch silk; an experience a cheapo rimfly would spoil.
