Default Smoked Salmon - Assistance please

Hi,

I would like to buy some good smoked salmon for christmas. Looking on the web, it seems i can get a side of WILD salmon (at vast expense). I would prefer to have wild salmon, but will categorically not buy it if it's come from a net. Does anyone know if the sellers of wild scottish salmon would have caught the fly on rod and line, or by net.? Obviously, as a C&R salmon man myself, it would be hypocritical in the extreme to buy netted salmon.

Does anyone know the truth?

Cheers
Alex

All wild Salmon for sale will have been netted,as it is illegal for an angler to sell it.

If it is wild Scottish smoked there is a good chance it will be from Usan Salmon Fisheries ltd, the company who have an extensive net fishery on the East Coast and who indiscriminately net fish returning to a range of Scottish rivers - intrinsically unsustainable in my view.

I'd go for something like wild alaskan smoked, if you can cope with the air miles - this begs the question what is really truly sustainable, other than a wild rod or net caught fish which the captor has taken from a stock which is in good health.

Thanks Jim, as i thought to be honest. Much that i don't approve of farmed salmon, i guess some offshore organic farm would be better than most?

Won't this be pacific salmon? prefer Atlantic to be fair.

Try Ullapool smokehouse, whisky/maple cured dry smoked
Its farmed but tastes great
I dont mind farmed smoked salmon ,as in wild fish the timeframe in which they are caught is small in order to achieve an effective cure ( back end fish tend not to cure properly due to fat content)
I am more than happy to buy smoked salmon from "selected" outlets even though salmon farms on the whole hack me off. At least its leaving the wild stock alone and helping to restore the rivers native fish stocks. I my opinion the days of "one for the pot" are gone

Marrbury Smokehouse in Galloway sell wild smoked salmon, from fish caught with their own net and coble in the River Cree. It's certainly not cheap, but it is very good indeed.

That looks excellent, and isn't bad value. problem is, it's still netted. I'd feel a hypocrite buying netted fish when i fight against salmon nets on here and elsewhere! - Guess i was just naive thinking that wild fish would be anything other than netted!
