Default Lures

Been fishing for about 6 months now and having started on Lures I now never use them.

Everyone seems to be saying that for still water fishing "lures now come into their own" and are good for fishing in cold conditions.

Is this true? and if so why? I would not normally use them....

i think one reason is that the trout are in the mode for packing on the protein for the winter and are therefore looking for a substantial target to munch, the meal has to be worth the effort, i find more often than not a slow retrieve is required as the fish will also conserve energy.

I will never go back to lures.

Went out last weekend for a day and there were a few lads to the side of me not touching anything on minkies, baby dolls, blobs etc being retrieved at various speeds and I was getting a touch a cast on small nymh immitations a matter of feet away.

Wrong. The best comp anglers in the UK are no different to very good non-comp anglers.... they are verstile, and have many strings to their bow.

Cant understand why?,don't get my wrong i like nothing more than watching the end of my line with a team of nymphs swinging round in the breeze. But if needs be i'm more the happy to change to a lure, cruncher=nymph lure=small fish, both imitations of a natural so whats the difference?

Post Lures

Hi Hrr
As an angler of over half a century of experience I can assure you that there is definately a place in fly fishing for lures, any season, any time of year.I fish lures, dry, and wet fly, nymphs, buzzers, and a thousand variations in between. Again all of these can be fished at any time of year when conditions dictate they are appropriate. Some anglers have a preference for what they use and this a matter of personal choice.
Lures do not always fish well in winter buzzers and nymphs do. The important thing is to get your flies down to where the trout have taken refuge and make sure you retrieve them slowly. They're hungry this time of year but that doesn't mean they will take any Christmas decoration that is thrown at them.

can't agree with that i would assume competition anglers are competent in most if not all forms of fly fishing.i am sure the top comp anglers will be delighted you have labelled them lure pullers

I've had a good few days using lures, especially when fish are feeding on fry. Not saying other things wouldn't have worked though.
There does seem to be a bit of "snobbery" involved around lures at some fisheries though, some people seem to look down on those who use them.
If they work, then why not?
