i've been given a zane line - i don't fish saltwater so is it ok to use on still and streams etc? may sound a bit daft - i suppose it has a coating to protect from ravages of salt and will still be ok for my purposes but i'm not certain..

I am sure it will be OK but dont most salty lines have very aggresive weight forward tapers for big flies?

Yep, there should be no problem using it on fresh water, but as said... you will hate the taper. It simply is not designed to present a trout fly adequately enough for a trout, but try it, who knows, you might be able to make it work for you. Never "throw the baby out with the bath water"
