Post Fishing in Extremely Cold Conditions

Hi readers

I'm looking out this morning at a picture postcard winter's scene bathed in sunshine and making the most of the fishing opporunity.I fly fish right through the winter in rain, hail, snow, and ice and I enjoy it but I seem to be in the majority of one at my local fishery.

Are any other trout fishermen out there that share my passion for fishing in extremely cold winter conditions or am I totally mad?

P.S. Just for the record I do catch fish.

When the water goes hard enough for birds to walk on it - I give up fly fishing.

My father used to make a sort of religious observance in the matter of fishing on March the 15th - I've known him cut a hole in the ice and dangle a worm in - just for form's sake.

I know it sounds bizarre but I prefer to fish in the winter rather than the summer!!!
Fantastic scenery very few people on the bank if I can keep moving, and warm I am a very happy man. Dont often fish for trout though but when I have it has been so bad the rod rings have froze up. Fly fishing for roach, perch and pike is great too as they shoal up in the winter and seem to look there best.
But what I really love is chub fishing with big lumps of breadcrust on the quiver tip in the snowy or icy conditions on the river. Go well wrapped up with very little gear and a big steaming flask of coffee. Incidently while doing this last february I caught quite a few sea trout on bread they seem to love it!!!

Default Always a good time in the cold

Hi, Some of my biggest fish have come during the cold weather. Last year at Ellerdine Lakes in Shropshire, I had fifteen and a half pounds of adrenaline stuffed fun on my line. That was a freindly against the Welsh International lads, with Russ Owen and the gang.

Absolutely fantastic time of year, though you do have to sort your prep's out before you go. It always seems that no-one else will bother, then most of your angling buddies turn up. After that you just end up in a freindly comp, laughing at Mr Unfortunate, whose lost and is now making the brews.

Good banter and lots of fun, wouldn't miss it for the world.

Best Regards

Stuart

Rocks on the coast here are currently covered in inch-thick crystal clear ice.
Certainly have to watch your step, but it is magical!

I love it on a crisp cold day. For me down here in the Kent and Surrey wilds it means you can go and spend a day on the Test and Itchen for a few quid and get some fantastic sport ....... dry and wet fishing.

All the upstream single dry fly disappears. Just fishing on a beautiful crystal clear river.

Just come back from graling trotting in South Wales. Rod rings froze on every retreive and the worm on the hook froze solid if it was out of the water for more than a minute. The worms in my bait tin in the front of my chest pack started to freeze too, so I had to keep it stuffed down the front of my shirt. At one stage my thumb froze to my centerepin. But I didn't see another fisherman apart from two herons and a very friendly kingfisher, and the snow scenes were really something. Result? One single grayling which came from the only bite of the day after covering about a qarter of a mile (which made me feel a lot better about fishing bait instead of fly!).

Don't get many days like this, so I tend to grab them whenever the opportunity presents itself.

In short, I like fising in the cold, especially when it is not in the driving rain!

It was -13 this morning on The Dee. Usual issues with cold extremities and frozen rings, but not previously had the problem today of big stones freezing to the soles of our wading boots.
