Default Coloured Mono

Does it make any difference? (I've given up on fluoro). The Angling Times was giving away red mono ..........when's that used?

A good article in this month's 'Fly Fishing & Tying', using coloured mono to tie buzzers.

Yes - it would then show as black.

Interesting! In the 1950's we used Racine Tortue line for tying hook-lengths for coarse fishing. The line had alternate sections of red and green to break up the line's profile.

Yes, I read that and tied up a few buzzers. Difficulty is remembering which way the loop went or you end up with bumps on the body.
Had a few on a buzzer tied with the Angling times free red mono (though 8lb is probably a bit thick) and a thorax dubbed with fiery brown standard dubbing.

I think that when using "pulling" tactics subsurface the colour of the mono doesn't matter too much, but I am convinced that it does when using dries.

This lesson was rammed home to me many years ago when I was heavily involved in competition fishing. I fished an eliminator on Chew at the height of the dry fly revolution. I was using 6lb clear mono -Smart if I remember right and my boat partner was on 6lb Maxima, the brown stuff. I had four fish on the first drift to my partner's none, but he had several fish come and swirl at his flies without taking. After a long back & forth conversation during which he quizzed me relentlessly as to what flies I was using and finally what leader material the penny dropped with a clang that should have been heard on the far side of the Bristol Channel. Eventually he changed to a clear mono and started to pick up a fish or two, but by then it was too late and I was too far in front.

Since then I've only used clear leader material and for the last five years or so all I have in my bag is fluorocarbon. It's not perfect - nothing is - but it's as good as it gets.
