Default Is it worth going fishing in this cold weather

After purchasing my Dad a fishing rod and reel for his birthday two weeks ago, he wants to go fishing to Woolaston Court before it closes on the 10th December. The only day we are both available to go is this Sunday.

When we went there in June he caught four fish on his first ever go at fly fishing. He is hoping for a similar amount of fish this time around. Is this wishful thinking given the current weather conditions ?

Currently the weather for Sunday is partly cloudy but cold. What is a trout's feeding habits during this weather ?

Fishing in the cold, provided the lakes aren't frozen, can be excellent. the rainbow trout is a cold water fish, so they tend to fight better in the cold. the feeding will be sparse, but remember these are stock fish, so it's their aggression you'll be appealing to mainly. you should do very well.

Hi Powerkiter, As far as I'm aware, Fish feed all the time. In cold weather and cold snaps, fish will still take a fly.

Yesterday, at Ellerdine Lakes in Shropshire, I had one fish in four hours. I'd missed two takes, though these were lightning fast. The fish here are taking fry patterns in white and green, they are also hitting Orange??

Prep yourself for the cold, lots of layers, so if you get too hot you can take a layer off. If you don't have enough layers on, you'll soon find out though, freezing your n@ts off.

Enjoy the day and get out there.

Regards

Stuart

Trout love the cold and will continue to take your fly even when the water surface is partially frozen over. Wrap up warm and take a large flask of something hot. Good luck

We had great fishing last year right through the cold weather at Wykeham Lakes in North Yorkshire, even with ice around the margins it was superb sport.
Fish dead slow, then slow down a bit!!!

Any recommendations on fly's to use. Will obviously ask at the hut when we get there but like to be prepared.

Green Woolly B*gger size 10 or 12. That did the damage for me last Thursday and Friday along with suspender buzzers.

Depends what food they are feeding on though as always.

With the cold weather, things have slowed down a bit on the res. I fish. Went out today for 4 freezing hours in a boat - even had a couple of snow showers. I expected (in my ignorance) the trout to be deep and interested if at all in a lure. After 2 blank hours, I switched to a buzzer and took 4 just under the surface.
