Does the rod butt not detail the model name? If it does some simple research will quickly provide the answer.

Presumably, you're wondering if it could be glass fibre? I'm not sure that Greys existed as rod producers / makers / assemblers in the hey day of glass fibre - I certainly don't remember and Greys branded glass fly rods. The latest 'generation' of glass rods are Hardy badged.

Virtually every carbon blank involves around 5% of glass in the backing scrim - if they don't - expect the blanks to break .

Technically you are allowed to sell a whole glass blank with a burnt matchstick stuck inside it as carbon fibre - but nobody in the trade bothers any more as most are buying very cheap carbon rods and having their decals put on them in China - and it is likely more expensive for the Chinese to buy glass fibre than carbon these days .

I you have a wee saw a slice across the blank will tell all - glass is white and carbon is grey ! ( Wrecks the rod though ! )

If you don't like it - sell it and buy one you do .

best wishes

Steve P

Or a 9V battery and your tongue! You need an unvarnished bit of blank, though.

Try waving it in the air during the next lightning storm

Or break the tip, send it to Greys, if they charge you £30 for a replacement, its one of theirs

Greys prior to it being bought by Upstream Leisure Ltd in 1996, just prior to Hardy buying the name, produced glass fibre fly rods for many years under the ownership of Malcolm Grey.

To answer the original question, that's a tricky one if the op has no experience of fly rods and how they feel in the hand. You can't even be certain by looking at the exterior colour. As glass has a very low modulus, If it is very wobbly when flexed in the hand, and doesn't recover to a still position fairly rapidly. Likely it is glass. (but could be poorly made CF!) The diameter of the blank above the handle is another indicator. A glass fly rod will be of a very large diameter in comparison to carbon.

Have you tried calling Greys to ask them?
