Default New fly fisher.

Hi all,

I am a beginner fisherman,I have been fishing bait/spinning for trout etc for just over a year now.I have just received a fly starter kit from my wife.
It consists of a ron thomson fly rod at 9ft 6",stillwater reel ,stillwater floating and intermediate line wf7 for both lines, plus a couple of reels of backing and 9ft leaders. One box of assorted fly.

I have just sorted one reel with backing, joining the backing to the fly line with a tucked blood knot tied to the loop on the fly line.I used the loop to loop connection for connecting the fly line and leader(leader is rated 3lb).

Now I don't have any tippet, could I use say a few inches of standard 2,3lb mono or fluoro?Or just go straight from leader to fly?

I will mostly be fishing Loch glow in Fife or local fisheries.

Thanks for any help,I tried the search function but to many grey areas.

You could go straight from your leader to fly but you may have problems with the leader turning over when u cast. I would suggest a tapered leader and would go for a 5 or 6 ib breaking strain.

Otherwise make your own leader with 3 3 ft lengths of progressively thinner monophiliment.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum.
the leader is the tippet. and at 7# lines, the leader at 3lb is far too light.get some 6/7lb BS leader.and fish 1 fly at the end of about 9'.that will work fine.Till you get a feel for it.

Thanks for the replys,
I think Ill pop out and get a few tapered leaders rated at 5/6lb,would a small tippet of 5lb mono be a good idea to save cutting the leader?

Thanks again for all this help.

Get some tapered leaders you will find as you change flies the leader will get shorter. To make up the difference just add 5 ib Tippett onto end to keep leader at least 9 ft long. Make sure you add tippet when the tapered leader is roughly same width of tippet. Once there is a big difference in width change leader.

Good luck!!!

I am unsure why you feel the need to stick with tapered leaders. The only time I feel the need to taper my leader is when fishing single dry fly.and even then, I would not be worried if I only had a piece of level leader.
If you are using a weighted fly/lure on the point then this will turn over your leader just fine

A beginner / novice fishing a loch / lakes with a WF7 line does not need a tapered leader, nor the complexity / knots of joining bits of mono together. Just use a straight piece of good mono (6 or 7lb BS, 9 to 10ft long). Keep everything simple until you are casting and fishing routinely well enough so you don't have to think about it.

Hi boydie, and welcome.
Just go with Jims advice for now, and move into the dark world of tapered leaders and tippets when you are more profficient.

I'd just attach 5ft of 15lb mono to the fly line with a loop at the end. Then attach 10ft of 6lb line to it. You can add a dropper, 5ft from the point, if you wish.

It's a simple set-up and the turn-over should be good. Keep it simple, there will be plenty of opportunities later to experiment with more "exotic" leader set-ups, if you still feel they are necessary.
