Default Nymphs, how do you use yours.

To help some more grease the tip of your line with mucillin. You could also grease you a section of your leader to help with controlling the depth of your fly.

I personally don't like indicators much, especially the floating yarn type. I find them restrictive, and inhibiting. It tends to lose the dimension of bite detection by feel. My way of thinking is that if you can feel and see the take, you have more chance than if you were only seeing it. Indicator nymphing is the lazy mans way of fishing. Someone who can nymph properly without an indicator, will always have more success than the guy with the indicator, as the better you become, the less you are going to need an indicator. Remember the key to success with any type of nymphing, is to try do it as close as possible, and have as straight a line possible between flies and rod tip. Any slack line will work against you. If you can get this right, you will find that the indicator will actually be a liability.

Andre, when it comes to short line nymphing I could not agree more but it is not possible in all situations to fish such a short line. Say if I was fishing over shallow gravel in gin clear water. I would then choose to fish a longer, say 2- 3 rod lengths of fly line plus a 10-12 foot leader.
Fishing this style if I felt the bite it would be to late. This is when I would use the tip of my fly line as an indicator or even rely on leaving a little memory in the butt of my leader to act as a visual cue to a take.

Yes, I'm with you. The closer you fish, the shorter the line, and the less neccessarry the attached indicator becomes. Further away, a sighter becomes usefull, although not essential. Techniques like line mending, low rod drifts, and anything to try to keep the line staright, will also help. If the river is not wadable to within a few meters of the fish, then you can feel justified in some assistance from a sighter.
My home waters are wadable and so can be fished close, so I don't need an indicator. I nymph with a 10 foot or 9 foot 9 inch rod, 3 or 4 wt, a leader of about 7 to 9 foot long, which includes a tippet section of about 2 or 3 feet of 5, 6, or 7x depending on certain conditions. Most done with high sticking,. upstream, and accross and down drifts.
