Default which scottish isle?

I am thinking of a family holiday on a scottish isle next summer with a bit (lots) of fishing for trout thrown in, will be traveling by ferry with car from ireland, so transport to island will have to include car ferry. Any one with any advice/ suggestions.

Got to be outer hebrides.
You can get ferry from several parts of mainland scotland to islands, but you will have a
wonderful fishing experience.

Scottish islands overview here.

Scottish Islands including the Outer Hebrides or Western Isles of Scotland

Fishing background here.

FishPal - Scotland - Hebrides - About The Hebrides

well worth scrolling around fishing site for pics and permits!

For me its skye, It has every thing, and is just big enough to keep turning up new things. And the landscape of Skye is really very special.
I usually stay up at the north end (Flodigarry) and if the hill lochs arent doing it, then a short session of the rocks easily bags a few Pollack and Mackerel to the fly.
Further ferries can then be caught from Uig to get you out to Harris and a few other places if you need to explore more of the outer hebrides.

Wherever you end up in the Islands, I am sure it will be a fantastic trip.

Sorry WP.but it has to be south Uist with 50% water.if you are a flyfisher.I always found sky to be a bit barren.IMHO apart from the Storr lochs of course. with North Uist then Benbeculla 3rd

I second that WP, Skye is an excellent place, not only for fishing, but for its amazing landscape, the cuillin hills, and its many towns to visit. I find the outer hebrides a bit boring, although the fishing is excellent (probably a bit better than the fishing on skye), there is almost nothing to do!

Islay is not to bad a run from Ireland, in fact on a clear day you should be able to see Islay from Northern ireland, certainly you can see NI from Islay! Been a number of times, never fished there, but I beleive there is good fishing there. Exceptionally friendly people, no "issues" with the Gaelic, Sundays and that palaver and not as long a run.
You can nip over to Jura too from there and there should be fishing there too. Its just a two minute ferry hop.

I would go with jim regarding uist as far as the most water goes, but i think its about 6 hrs on the ferry from oban, the isle of islay might be worth a look at as its only 2 or 2 hrs 30 minutes from kennacraig, but if you go to uist you have the 3 islands all connected by causeways.also have a look at CALMACS web page for any deals going regarding ferry fares as there is some deals going
hope this helps regards Duncan

That's a fair journey you are planning. Assuming you are arriving at Stranraer/Cairnryan you have several hours drive from there to the ferry ports!

My choice would be
Lewis and Harris (joined) ; A great mixture of waters some easy and some really difficult. The guide book doesn't tell you where the best lochs are so you get to find them yourself. More lochs than you can fish in a lifetime. The area north of Back is one of the great trout fishing wildernesses in Scotland. It has a reasonable sized town - Stornoway.

Second would be the joined islands of South and North Uist and Benbecula. The very best lochs are expensive to fish, sometimes hard to get on your choice so check out availability beforehand if you decide to go there.

Closest to the ferry port - just - may be Islay. Some very good fishing and there is another ferry over to the island of Jura: sparsely populated and the adder capital of Scotland and famous for the huge whirlpool Corryvreckan! Some good fishing here too but the best lochs are remote.

The Uists for me too. All the lochs on Benbecula and S. Uist (except about a dozen big name ones) for £30/week. There is nearly always a good wind for fishing on the Uists

The fact that there is almost nothing to do is the great attraction! You have nothing to do but relax Might not be best for a family holiday unless the family is happy with empty beaches, birdwatching and a bit of hill walking.
The Uists are the least midgey of the islands, mostly because it is always blowing half a gale.

Skye would be my choice, spent a week there in September and caught from Storr Lochs and Uig pier. Also go out on a boat from Portree called MV Stardust, awesome time watching sea eagles.
