As a very simple option - don't pay out loads and loads of "twine" behind the boat. Simply overhand knot the twine (about half way along its total length) around the middle thwart board and then throw the drogue over the bow and throw a few "figure of 8" turns around the middle rowlock (like a cleat).
If you want to reduce the amount of side to side yaw and/or control the angle of the drift a bit more, you can add a simple G- clamp of sufficient size to fix onto the gunwhale and pass the doubled twine through that to change the position of the anchor point.
Finally, the most whistles and bells option involves two G clamps at opposite ends of the same gunwhale and to pay out the whole length of the doubled "twine" so that the drogue is at one point on the "circumference" of twine and you can pull on either one side or the other like giant steering wheel.
However, that final option is always too much of a faff for me (particularly on shorter drifts) although it might pay off on 2-mile plus drifts on an Irish Lough.
