Default Poll on fishery management

I've posted details of a little recent project done by my colleague in Kent for review and discussion in the Conservation section:
Spawning site created in 5 hours

I was interested more broadly though whether people thought this was something that they are happy to see undertaken.

Two thumbs up from me - and more please, Paul!

As I said on the other thread, it's great how you've engaged the local EA tech team too, to the extent of getting them into the river to help with positive habitat-creating work... increasing the resilience of the river even if the obstructions are intractable for now.

For those who voted "no", I would be genuinely interested to hear what would be more welcome/useful. Or, equally important, what is not useful about the current works.

I would love to see that kind of work done on my bit of the Kennet .
sadly the beat owner is very conservative (small c ) in his outlook ,will take some attitude moulding over the next few seasons .

Well I'll be trying to let people see this (and related) kinds of work and also marry it with accounts of fishing pre and post works.

Yes Paul I think it's great to see this kind of work undertaken and I believe the Wild Trout Trust are doing great work. It's very important to give more people a chance to get involved and interested in restoration projects etc and this forum seems to have helped greatly with that.

Some projects carried out don't always work but so long as lessons are learnt
then it's not a waste of time.

It is also important to remember that there are plenty of river keepers and others who have been doing this kind of work for many, many years - often in the face of certain ridicule - and as Bob P (I think) already said - you are not re inventing the wheel here.

One more point that annoys me a bit. Why are before and after pictures of restoration jobs (not always WTT) often taken at different times of the year. The before picture in January and the after in June!!! I am genuinely interested to see results after say a couple of years but they must be compared at the same time of year.

Andy Thomas is a great bloke and is doing good things on the chalkstreams in the face of hard nosed tradition.

Keep up the good work

Tony - will check with Andy and find out (I think it is a small syndicate).

Reg - the perennial problem of fixed point photography, I can sympathise both ways as good shots are vital. I do know that it is sometimes difficult to justify the petrol costs to go and take a single photo during a particular month when you, otherwise, would not be on site. From a WTT point of view - I cover the whole of the UK from my base in Sheffield and the other two conservation officers have a rough "north/south" split, but they also take in Ireland (Republic of and Northern), Scotland and the East of the UK. Sadly, this often means that the "before" and "after" shots might be something of a compromise that are taken during site visits that, by necessity, roll as many tasks into one day as possible (charitable funding must be used carefully). The best situation is if you can get someone local to do the business on a voluntary basis.
