Default Interesting Day

Hi Folks.

i'm new to the form and the whole fly fishing experience, however I am really enjoying it. There is something very addictive about it.

Anyway just want to share a recent experience at a small stillwater that I visted recently.

When I first thought about taking up fly fishing I got a casting lesson first to see how I would get on. Now this wasn't with an approved instructor but with a good friend who has many years of experience. He showed me the overhead cast and told me the importance of using your arm and not your wrist. He then showed me the roll cast which I still can't do. Thats something for me to aim for next year.

Anyway, I went to a small stillwater with a good mate who had never fly fished but was interested in having a go. As he had never done it before the owner gave him a half hour or so casting tuition (free whihc was really nice). He was telling him to cast the line with the rod at 45 degrees (if you know what I mean) and not straight up and down. He also said it is all in the wrist.

So now I a bit confused now.

Also one thing I did notice about the gear that my mate hired was that the leader was joined to the the fly line with a clinch knot, nothing strange there. But the best part was the fly line had no loop or anything, the fly line istelf had a one turn water knot tied in the end of it and the leader tied to that. It was basically a loop with the line put through the loop. like the sort of knot you would tie as a kid, or the first part of it anyway. Any comments on this??

Sorry for the novel for a first post.

Jim

This was how it was done in an earlier time, still ok to do in an emergency, the big drawback with this is you are limited to a cast of 9'-10' as it is nearly impossible to pull the knot through the top eye if you have a fish on
'Trout from stillwater' by peter lapsly.A bit dated but everything you need to know in a very readable fashion.Amazon normally have p/b copies for about £3

Whoa............I hope he was showing you how to roll cast, these are very wristy casts. But the last thing you want to do in an over head cast is break the wrist. You will be in all sorts of bother if you do. I should try and get a proper lesson or at least get hold of a decent DVD. There are one or two really good ones about...........Welcome to this crazy game of ours, you'll love it.............birdsnest
