Learn to cast with both hands , you never know when you might need to . I am equal with both , just as $hit with both

Seriously though you should rest it as whatever it is will most likely only be aggravated by casting . Go see the doc if it doesn't clear up after a little rest .

I ****ed both mine up lifting weights so bad I couldn't lift a cup off coffee never mind a fishing rod , went to docs and had cortisone injections in both arms and was good to go again after a few days to let it all settle down .

Its quite serious really, you probably have tennis elbow. My advice- rest it and furthermore, you aren't casting correctly, you need to make the rod work-not you! I think your making your joints work overtime. You won't hear me say this often but get an instructor.....rest first. It'll be cheaper than a physio and you don't want cortisone injections. Casting should be virtually effortless. My mate is suffering the same thing...trying too hard.

Default Painfull Elbo

Hi

Sorry to hear about your elbow.
It is indeed tennis elbow. I have had it a few times over the last 50 plus years.
I have never stopped fishing. Go to Boots and buy a bandage type thing I'm sure it is made by Elastoplast. It goes on your arm just below your elbow you simply tighten it up. I think it is caused by the ligament seperating from the bone. The bandage simlpy holds it firmly in place until it heals.
Hope this helps

Regards

I have a dodgy arm caused though overdoing it with weights some years ago and damaged the flexor tendon which connects on the inside of the elbow. I am no expert but am pretty sure "tennis elbow" is inflammation on the outside of the elbow.
Mines took a long time to go away- Cortisone helped ease it for a while at the time it was bad but in the end I had to get an op to trim the tendon from the bone and allow it to reheal- took about 9 months to really feel better. With the flexor tendon it affected the two outside fingers on my hand too. Gotta be careful with Cortisone 'cos it really masks the pain and is to allow the inflammation to dissipate but if you keep aggravating it it will come back and potentially worse, as pain is the bodies way of telling you not to do something.

I recently aggravated my arm again after several years of being Ok and was worried it was fishing that had kicked it off. However I worked it out that it wasn't I had just over done it lifting a suitcase of all things.
It took a while to ease off but what I found really helped was a Nexcare Hot/Cold pack (comes with a thinsulate sleeve). You can buy them in Tesco's pharmacy.
You need to experiment: you can heat it in the microwave or freeze it in the freezer, I found heat soothed it a lot - felt great when wearing it, but it wasn't really shifting the pain but when I started using it cold, though it was less comfortable my sore arm went away after about a week.
I even fished through this time- you can wear the pack on the joint under a jumper no probs with the velcro to hold it in place.

Its unlikely you have done the damage I did to my arm so don't panic but if its not going away you really need to see a doctor and stop aggravating it in the meantime. A few weeks of rest will buy you a seasons aggravation free fishing next year. If you over do it you might have to stop longer, so console yourself with the rubbish weather and let it heal.

Correct .

Yes you have to be careful with the jabs , masks what is going on and also will weaken the tendon if given to many times . 3 times into one site is the max recommended .

Default Get physio! Money well spent but I am biased

Smac- as the last poster said you are probably suffering from a folders elbow rather than tennis elbow. Drop you arm down by your side with your palm facing up, if it's the inside (near your body) then it could be holders elbow, if it's the pushed then it could be tennis elbow.

The normal medical diagnosis is medial epicondylitis(golfers) or lateral epicondylitis. These terms mean inflammation of the bone (epicondyle) where the tendons attach. Tendons are how muscles attach to bones, the problem arises due to overuse ( or misuse) and occurs in later life, research shows these problems are degenerative in nature and not inflammatory this exPlains why results of rest and antiinflammoratories are poor. The best treatment strategy is to identify the causative factors and rectify them, also to differentially diagnose , this ensures nothing else is causing your symptoms such as referred neck pain, or ulnar or radial nerve entrapment. These are frequently missed even by sports/tendon specialists.

The best advise is get a nhs physio referral first ilfrom your GP , if it's a little while then go private I'll post later with more info.

Oh and tendons are my research area.

Hi Steve,I constantly suffer from Repetative Strain Injurys(RSI)s
which I beleive you will be told you have got if you go to Doc
or Physio.Try keeping your elbow warm,I use a tubeygrip bandage.
I also use a velcro fastening strap which goes round my forearm
(not to tight but enough you feel it if you tense your forearm muscles)
The idea of this is,instead of your muscle pulling straight A to B it pulls
from A to strap pressure point to B.This has helped me for years but the best
remedy is rest. Hope this helps
John

You don't mention what sort of fishing you normally do. Long and powerful rods even cast correctly are absolute b*ggers and put great strain on the tendons. I had problems using the B&W 11ft 3 single handed grilse rod many years ago.

One option you may like to think about is to use a switch rod and start casting double handed while it heals. These have a much longer longer foregrip and a butt grip.

You can buy these in lengths from 10ft 6 and line weights from about 4 to 10. It takes a bit of getting used to but as long as you remember that it is the bottom hand that creates the tip speed you should be able to cast very good distances even if you are a reservoir fisherman.

Good luck
Malcolm
