I know that rods have to go in the hold but what about reels? Can they be taken in hand luggage. I cannot find any information to say they are prohibited and I have previously carried fishing reels in my hand luggage to Spain in 2002, but wondered if there had been any changes.

Most will say that your reels can go on with you, as long as all the backing and line is taken off! In the US they actually recommend that you take your expensive reels on board with you, so go figure.

Take it with you in hand luggage. My reel was stolen from my hold luggage somewhere between London and Venezuela. Won't make that mistake again!
