Default Outcasts Aberdeenshire casting club

We have a very informal casting club going on in Aberdeenshire. We generally meet at a football pitch or a park , sometimes at an indoor sports hall.

On Sunday we met at Haddo Fishery, Ben Dixon from Orvis gave a casting demonstration on roll casting , single and double Spey circle cast all with the single hander. Magnus Angus was there and Peter McCallum gave a fly tying demo.

Ben then gave casting advice and held one to one sessions. There are no costs involved other than sharing the cost of hiring the venue , there are usually a couple of qualified casting instructors on hand who give there time and advice free gratis.

I know most of the guys on the forum are from other parts of the UK and central Scotland, but if you are in the area all are welcome , I’ll post when we are holding the next one.

We did invite Albert Wright, but as he is the figment of someone’s imagination he was unable to attend.

glad to hear you got started..Id be delighted to get some help but am north of Inverness....what about an Inverness casting club....some of the best[unsung] casters Ive seen are the locals on the Ness...potential for a masterclass without instructers!!..not that instructers wouldnt be most welcome

Excellent news, its good to know its up and running, there seems to be a demand up there, sounds like its been going on for some time which is a surprise.

Hi "ohanzee"

Yes, we have been having fun and helping each other out for a few years now, all very informal.

pretty impressive stuff, i'm a fan of raising the quality of casting generally in any fun way anywhere, for those that have never seen Ben Dixon in action, he raises the quality bar just by watching.

Yes, fun is a good learning aid. The day we were at the indoor casting venue there was quite a good group of youngsters watching for a while.

You can do all sorts of stuff indoors, the basics of the double haul, accuracy with hoops placed at various distances, where you can stand while casting, or use a chair if you often fish from a boat. The hoop on a stand in the background for example was for practising casting tight loops in a wind, the idea was to keep false casting your line through the hoop and if your loops weren't tight enough ..... your leader got tangled in the stand. Other games include things like curve casts around cones etc etc.

Best wishes
Mike

It seems you guys north of the border, really go the extra mile to give every one the chance of regular extra coaching. It's great to see. From what I know of the Glasgow guys its a very enviable situation.
With Rutland and Grafham and the wealth of still water fishing around here what a shame we dont have a similar situation with a sports hall and regular meetings in a local park, where we can while away the winter months, and get regular coaching at an affordable price, and I guess good practice for the budding instructors to learn they're teaching skills.

I noticed there is a North west casting club, Lets hope we can take a leaf out of your books and keep this spreading throughout the UK.

Hi "Pom"

Yes, I know that Alex and Alberto and Co have a great thing going on down in Glasgow too, I've been trying to go down this year but haven't managed to get a break from the fishery, I hope to get a chance to make it down soon.

For those of you down in England, why not think about going along to a BFCC meeting next year, see http://www.thebfcc.co.uk/ I know some of the folks involved in this and they are great guys!

Best wishes
Mike
