Default Returning fish

I was at Orvis Innis Fishery in Cornwall last month for the Bank International. David Johns, the owner was adamant that the best way of returning fish was to throw them in to the water, head first from a distance of at least a couple of feet above the water. He claims that this stimulates the trout into breathing and recovering quickly. David has been in the business a long time so I wouldn't question his knowledge. What do other fishery owners recommend?

That's interesting - I was next to Dave on day one of the Airflo final.

Super chap and we had some good banter so I am sure that he will not mind me commenting that he never got a chance to demonstrate that as his preferred method seemed to be to release them about 20 yds from the bank

Wasn't that largely to do with the depth they were coming up from?

If needed I will hold them under the water with one hand and then using my other hand I'll waft water towards them so there is a current going through their gills. That brings them round quick enough and they are released in the knowledge that if they try and do the back stroke again I can easily get them and spend more time ensuring they go back swimming strongly.

This was doing the rounds about 20 years ago. Even an article in Fish Farmer magazine regarding the merits, etc. Not suprisingly, David can continue using the 'slam dunk' method of stocking secure in the knowledge that he is on his own.
