Whats your Golden Moment of 2011?
It's a cold wet Monday morning and in an attempt to cheer myself up I am re-living my Golden Moment of 2011.
For me it was a balmy June day and I was fishing my favourite pond at Jervaux Abbey, North Yorkshire. The sun shining, God in his heaven and the pond all to myself. Two rainbows were cruising the shallow end of this gin clear pond. A measured false cast and a perfect delivery and a size 18 dry Grey Duster arrived as if by air mail on the nose of the larger fish (a minor miracle given my casting skills!). The fish duly obliged by sipping it down and considerately waiting until I tightened on it (another minor miracle as I usually manage to whip the fly off the water in my unbridled excitement before the trout has a chance to taste my offering). The scrap that ensued took me up and down the pond for what seemed like a couple of days but the trout was intent on rewarding my efforts by neither breaking me or throwing the hook. Slipping the net under him I was rewarded by the company of a fish that was every bit as perfect as my good lady wife, and defininitely more co-operative. Slipping the hook I took the opportunity of admiring this wonderful creation as I held him in the water to aid his recovery from his exertions. Finally with a wave of his tail he departed to rejoin his chum leaving me with raised blood pressure and a big grin.
There were other moments to treasure from this year but that was the pinnacle for me.
