Fished Hanningfield today.

Any method, namely spinning over there really gets my goat!!

There off my chest.

Its all about the money I suppose. I just think its a shame.

Absolutely no skill whatsoever in spinning. My mum could do it.

I agree with ifor.

I dont like the any method fishery myself, but fisheries need to survive somehow. If they are not getting fly anglers and other method anglers are willing to pay to fish, then thats what they need to do to survive.

As its for long enough been said, use it or lose it.

It also brings youngsters into the sport. Over 16,000 children have fished on Northumbrian Water fisheries in the last four years. Very few fly fishing but many will end up fly fishing when they are older. There are plenty of fly-only bank sides available too. Even though I only fly fish I think the idea is fantastic and love to see families fishing together. Anything that brings younsters into the sport is a very, very good thing!

I congratulate NWL for their inclusive thinking.

Yep flicking a lump of shiny metal out and winding it back in on a fixed spool reel is a work of art.

I spin and plug for pike sometime in the winter months. It's an agricultural way of fishing.

I get the fact that its all about the money, I said so in my second post. Doesn't mean that I have to like it though. It's like an Eastern European version of supermarket sweep sometimes.

Hanningfield is run along similar lines as other Northumbrian Waters. They made a decision to allow "any method" fishing a few years ago on most of their waters. It was initially met with lots of criticism and contempt from the fly fishing fraternity but it has proved to be a resounding success in getting people fishing again, especially youngsters who can fish for free when accompanied by a senior. In today's climate where companies are run by bean counters, it was a necessary step and I applaud Don Coe, the NW Fisheries Manager for introducing it. Furthermore he has probably saved the jobs of his Rangers and their families by taking such a radical step. Take note all.
