Default 5wt line: Snowbee XS or Rio Gold?

Having just bought myself 5wt 9" rod (Greys G-Tec) I now need to purchase a floating line.

I currently use a Snowbee XS on my 7/8wt rod and love the way it casts.
The only negative is that after about 9 months the tip doesn't float as well as it should.

I've also had the Rio Gold highly recommended to me.
I looked at one in the shop this morning and the coating did feel incredibly slick. And I really like the new melon/grey colour it comes in.

Any thoughts from people who have used these lines?

Cheers
Dan

I have had an XS in 7 weight for a lon time...to give you an idea, John was still dep ed of Trout Fisherman! I believe he was involved in the design..that line is still going strong, getting a few dark lines on it, but it still works fine, it must 7 or 8 seasons old and has been used for saltwater too.

For the #5, where you are, byt he very nature of th eline weight, going for more delicate presentation and not distance (not what I call distance) then have a look at a Teeny Presnetation. You should still be able to cast 20 - 25 yards with no problem, but short range work...the mainstay of any trout river work...is glorious.

Ah, sorry, should have mentioned that I'm generally fishing small stillwaters.

Still ideal! What sort of distances are you trying to cover...20 yards? or are you trying to get shooting head distances? In which case you would do better with a #6 WF.

For a #5, the Teeny is an excellent all rounder. I use mine at Carsington...not a small stillwater! Or on wild waters in Scotland or Ireland.

I'm not fussed about casting great distances at all, so I'll check this line out.
Thanks for the advice!

Why not try the XS Delicate Presentation from the same manufacturer. It is a very nice line.

Both are great lines, very slick, float high and no memory. They both have different tapers and it depends what suits your rod/casting style best. The Rio is the heavier of the two lines and should load a faster action rod better at close range. The 2 tone colour also helps to find the loading point.
I cannot fault both lines, but at £15 cheaper i would go for the Snowbee XS.

Cheers Diarmid.

Thanks Diarmid, the info about the the Rio line being heavier is actually very helpful.
As I tested my new rod with a light 6wt line on and loved the way it casted so, a slightly heavier 5wt line should work really well.

Cheers

Well that pretty much decides it for me then I think.
Thanks for that.
