Default Just had a baby. . .

. . . when is it ok to start going fishing again?

Before she arrived I'd go most weeks if not every other week. I appreciate that I wont be going every week or even every other week from now on.

When is it safe to say 'sorry pet Im going fishing this weekend you'll have to look after the baby'

I work mon-fri and my wife is on maternity so I feel bad nipping off for a whole Saturday or Sunday and leaving her with the baby.

The baby is 4 weeks old.

Any advice?

Mate, i feel your pain. my first came along in November last year and prior to that i went every weekend. for the first 3 months there was no fishing, and since then it's been 3 times every 2 months with a week in Iceland allowed. That said, if your missus is anything like mine she'll start nesting, and it'll be an extension to the house next. thanks to that i have only been out once since July. I told her this morning that i would be taking a day's holiday to go fishing in the near future. her response was that it'd be better spent decorating, and i told her in no uncertain terms that it would be spent at Lechlade, and that this was 'non negotiable'. Sadly, you have to face it that you're fishing will be severely curtailled for a year or so.

You'll have to get used to it for a few years I reckon. I get out about 6 times a year now with a 5 and 4 year old and another on the way.

Don't you mean your wife just had a baby?

Just start fishing as soon as the new season opens. It is the shooting season now. I never could get my head round this modern man business.

If you set your stall out now, you will find it much easier to get out fishing for the rest of your life.

But the secret is gathering enough brownie points, during every waking second when your not fishing.

Your missus is probably still tired and a bit emotional and hormones all over the place, so dont be sitting on yer a.rse all saturday drinking beer and watching rugby, then announce that your going fishing in the morning. Thats a level 5, level of expertise will come much later in life (im a level 6).

Id say your a level 0 at present working towards a level one. Grovel as much as possible and agree to absolutely everything, then she will love you so much or feel sorry for you and you will be allowed to go fishing.

Either that, or buy her a bottle of wine and a chich flick and take the baby fishing with you. But what ever you do dont put the pram in the boat

I'll sumerise it for you as best I can with my experience. I keep fishing diaries of all my fishing down through the years and before my kids I once went for 27 consecutive days during the duckfly/olives on Corrib. Now with 2 kids I won't get out 27 times in a season. It's not so bad thou, just pick your battles, and as mentioned browny points are gold.

Spot on there.

I brought my wife and daughter home from the hospital at teatime and went Seatrouting that same night

I don't think she was all that impressed but it did set my stall out for the next 20 years.
