Default Ground baiting for trout

The whole idea of put and take fisheries is relativly new to us over here is Ireland and I was at one a few weeks back. I noticed a guy down the bank was having some good fishing and as you do I watched to see what he was doing regards method. He had a bag of what looked like trout pellets and was throwing a few in every now and then which would pull fish up and he'd then drop in his dry fly. I was p**sed off when I seen what he was at, when I said it to him he said "why not, the lads in the carp lake do it". I would think it is not allowed in fisheries but have not seen anything in any fishery rules (the few I looked at on line) outlawing it. When you look at carp fishing which is for the most part the same as trout fisheries, you go in, you pay your money and you try and catch the stocked fish in the lake. The difference here being it is a given that you use sometimes hugh quantities of bait to attract carp into your swim....so why not with trout fisheries. My opinion is it can't be right......can it.

People that are this desperate, surely are not in it for the right reasons. If they are that hungery for a fish tescos is the answer.no sport and get your fish to take home.

groundbaiting with flies also can be an expensive hobby aswell.Unless you tie your own.

not allowed to do it on the couple lakes I've seen. It is printed on the rules sign when you go in.

I do have an amusing story though. Back in the US where I grew up, there were a couple of private clubs that had trout waters flowing through them. The streams weren't the highest quality in terms of insect life, so supplemental feeding was required (i.e. pellets in an automatic feeder) at times. Some of the fish became so used to pellets that they keyed in on anything that sounded like a pellet 'plopping' into the water. A split shot or bead head was enough to bring fish across a pool charging for the non existent pellet. Of course the solution was to tie up some pellet flies with brown dubbing which the fish would readily eat. After a couple easy fish it was time to move to the next pool and throw nymphs/dries again.

Thanks,
Rick

How about walking the bank with the intention of disturbing daddies and other terrestrials, a proven and accepted? legal? method of natural ground baiting.

Hmmm... Tricky one that. I guess it's the same as 'shuffling'.
I have to confess to having shaken the odd tree in the past but it never helped me catch any more fish so I now save my energy.

I wonder when the split came in the two forms of angling, ie, it's OK to bait up will course fishing but not game fishing. My guess is it goes back to fly fishing being a more noble pursuit in times past. Then again I'm sure the concept of stocked fisheries would appear to noble to generations past what with blobs and so on. Also what are peoples opinions of flys made to look like pellets and so on, where do you draw the line. If you were having a blank day and a guy bagging up gave you a pellet pattern would you use it. I did hear a story of a fishery in southern Ireland were people were using chicken skin on a hook and cleaning up. It does make you wonder about peoples reason for fly fishing, I guess some people like fishing but other are only interested in catching.
