Season's lessons and observations
After a month away from books forums rods rivers and tying , so just thought I'd pass on some completely randon lessons and observations, which might help river newbies or less experienced anglers.
1. The Klinkammer is a great indicator fly, but suffers more splashes and rejections than any fly i know.
2. The JT Olive is a perfectly lethal olive imitator
3. Tiny black dry flies work, even if spotting them can be hard. Size 20-26 are well worth having.
4. Regardless of that, the Griffiths Gnat is a must have pattern on any river with trees on it.
5. For me, a flashback pheasant tail consistently outfishes a Hares Ear and nymphs down to size 18 are well worth having.
6. Mike Barrio makes a superb fly line for a great price.
7. Cane rods of 8.5ft+ are a bit bloody awkward and heavy.
8. Its getting increasingly hard to find bad Guideline rods.
9. Lucian's CDC is the best out there.
10. Varivas make great small / tiny dry fly hooks but their eyes are irritatingly small.
11. Kneeling on the river bed helps catch more fish.
12. Tackle tartery and buying far too much tying gear is a completely normal state if mind, even in a recession.
13. St Patrick screwed up royally by not introducing Grayling to Irish rivers.
14. Varivas leaders and copoly are amazingly thin but crinkle up too easily.
