Default Ever had a day when you couldn't cast for Sh*t?

Well I had one today.

Usually I'm fairly competent and can get a fair distance if needed but still get the odd tangle now and then which is just the way it goes. But today I was all over the place. I probably spent more time undoing tangles and remaking leaders than I did fishing. It was embarrassing.

In the end I gave up and went home.

That happens to me when I think about casting. Just don't think about it and you'll do fine.

I'm having a life where I cast like sh*t.

Hopefully when its over I will be resurected with talent.
For now all I can do is keep buying expensive rods, watching videos, reading theory and be secure in the knowledge, It aint the tackle thats sh*te. It really is just me!

Hello All I cast with my forefinger on the handle not with the thumb by doing it this way you can not do a bad back cast because with this practise you cannot break your wrist causing no bad casts to your rear and forward casts are good, so if your reading this stand up put your forefinger in the air as if you were going to cast keep it straight and you will not be able to break your wrist with the movement between 11and 1.
But this does not suit everyone.

Flat calms and heavy/dense flies drive me nuts! Buzzers that'll get you down there fast in the sunshine but want to catch on your floater as it sits on the water motionless....you recover your top dropper from the spaghetti only to discover your middle dropper has got itself in the same predicament! You recover your middle dropper and discover your point has snagged on the bottom! aghhhh! Whilst you sort the point out the other 2 feckers are doing their best to catch up in the floating spaghetti again!! You finally manage to get the whole deal aerialised again until the dead air drops your back cast like a lump of lead (usually over some high obstruction behind you) you increase line speed hauling like a maniac whilst trying to clear the obstruction only to see that on the on the shoot, the flies land in an unsatisfactory manner. You're not happy your flies are fishing correctly so you bring them back in only to find your leader is now spaghetti!! You untangle the mess, snipping off the dropper flies to make things easier. Then its the ball-breaker.... as you tie the dropper flies back on, they start catching on the floating line spaghettti again as if they are magnetised to it!! You look to the sky and curse the gods, mutter stuff about joining the golf and snooker fraternity...You know that you have the right buzzers on and the depths are correct so you perservere....next cast, all goes spot on... you get that fish you've earnt. The fecker takes the top dropper during cloud cover...Arghhh! it wraps your leader up in knots you couldn't tie if you tried!!!!

Casting can be a bstd sometimes and the conds that go with it deal with it

I use the same grip as you but for the exact opposite reason - more wrist movement is possible. If you position yourself with your elbow on the arm rest and use the 'thumb on top' grip (i.e. look at your thumbnail) see how much you can move you wrist. Now use the forefinger up grip, so you are now looking at the back of your hand and finger nail - now compare how much wrist movement you can get.

Wrist movement isn't the cause of bad casting.

Hi James9118 I have been using this way for 30yrs and 5yrs with the thumb when I changed to reservoirs I had to find distance and like everybody else I struggled so in time I got the right gear and started learning I even found away of getting extra yardage. and I mainly use 1 fly unless I'm on the boat then I use 2 all on a level leader and WF.

Aye, basically every time I go fishing... it's tree trout central when I'm around... I'm astonished that I actually catch any fish! Seriously though even the best have days where everything goes t1ts up, it's all about battling through it and then savouring the precious days when everything goes your way .

I think at times one can just lose your fishing "mojo". Try as much as you like but it won't happen. Casting goes to pot and river reading becomes illiterate. Sometimes fishing just doesn't work on that particular day. You did the right thing by going home. Don't get depressed by it, move on and go again.
