Default Cupped flutter collars

Always being on the lookout for new materials to enhance my fly tying, I recently bought some of these in various colours.
Now comes my dilemna!
What is the best method of using these? Would it be with the dished side towards the eye of the hook or the curved side, as I understand it these are used to create a disturbance in the water, so, the dished side?
Also on lures would they be tied in front of the "hackle" or behind it? What would be the best way to fish them?
Any advice or views on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
In my amateur way it is flies and lures that I tie for trout fishing, mainly stillwater fisheries.
Thanks in advance
Keith
