Default Nymph for intermediate line with lure

I have been fishing at my local stillwater, raemoir trout fishery in Aberdeenshire, and have been told to fish an intermediate line with a lure and a nymph. They told me a cat's whisker is the lure to choose but did not mention anything about the nymph. I was hoping someone could enlighten me and suggest a nymphy type thing to use with the cat's whisker on the intermediate line?

Cheers in advance,
Alex

Alex, I think they are blowing up your skirt. The lure needs to move quickly, the nymph slowly. The two are not related.

Well I catch a lot using lures & nymphs with a medium-paced figure of eight retrieve, so I don't actually think it's too crazy an idea.
Since the cat's whisker is fluoro lime-green (or yellow) & white, maybe a drab PTN or GRHE a couple of feet up as a dropper might cover some more bases, though I personally never use more than one fly at a time.

It's a standard tactic, Alex, and not a bad one at this time of year too.

Comp anglers do it all the time with blobs (or other lures) and crunchers/Diawls/buzzers etc. The lure fetches the fish in for a butchers, and if they're not in the mood for a blob (who can blame them ) then the chances are, they'll have a nip at the nymph. Experiment with swapping positions (point/dropper) for the nymph and the lure.

Christy is right, that nymphs aren't their best fished quickly, but I think he underestimates the power of a slow/medium retrieve for a lure. As Mr Collyer says, the two can work hand in hand, on the day.

I've recently read an article on the feeding habits of trout in the colder months, basically when very cold or windy, fish will feed further down near the bottom and need enticed; hence the lure. As the daytime temp increases, the fish will leave the bottom in search of nymphs, bloodworm and buzzers, these will be your dropper flies.
Today at my local water, I'll be using the following: Floating line with a 18ft leader, humungus on the point, snatcher on the 2nd dropper and a JC Diawl Bach on the bob, all fished very slowly. I may swap to a couple of buzzers later in the day.

I've read about this method, so it must work .................

Not sure about that one m8 ? I have had days when fishing a lure quite fast they have shown a distinct preference for my diawl bach on the dropper and how many times when fishing buzzers or nymphs have I made a hash of my cast and stripped it back in disgust when bingo fish on not many things set in stone at this game.

tightlines jonboy.

You need to try a lure you can fish with a slow to medium figure-of-eight retrieve, one that has a lot of built-in motion. My favourite set-up is a black woolly bu99er on the point and a Diawl Bach on the dropper - a deadly combination this time of year.

A small reservoir near to me responds very well to a fast inter or Di3 and a pair of DBs behind a mini lure on top dropper. Time and again, the lure draws the fish in and the hang at the end of the cast results in one of the nymphs being taken no matter how fast the original retrieve was (and it often works a treat on a fast Roly Poly). Deadly.

One of my favourite methods is to fish an inter or sink tip with a long leader, Blob on top acting as an attractor, Diawl Bach and Cruncher in the middle with a Booby on the point. This cast can be pulled and twiddled.

I'll get fish follow the Blob and when hanging they often turn away and take one of the two nymphs.

I also take quite a few on the Booby with this method, although the nymphs are more productive, regardless of retrieve.
