Default Where in Scotland?

The better half and myself are currently saving for a place in Scotland, nothing grand just somewhere to rest our heads and hang our rods and climbing gear while we're in the UK for 6 months of the year.

The question is- where?

The main priority being- Proximity to fishing, both salmon and wild trout and preferably a good association water to keep costs down. One can always travel to paid, occasional fishing, but it would be nice to be able to go on whim or of an evening.

So far im thinking near Aberdeen as the association has water on the Dee, Grantown or maybe near Dumfries for the Burgh water on the Nith.

All suggestions are welcome and the person with the most useful suggestion/advice can have the place for a week when we're not there.

Thanks in advance.

Robin

Funny you should say that fishfinger, Louise keeps poking me in the ribs and whispering Skye in my ear, due largely to the Cuillin range, and i caught my first 2 and only salmon (grilse) from the Creed on Lewis.
The problem with the Outer Hebrides is access to the main land for excursions.
Skye on the hand is less of a chore..

Does anyone have any knowledge of the fishing on Skye?

Thank you

How remote are you prepared to go, Loxley? What is your main priority for the fishing - Salmon or Trout? Rivers/Still?

As remote as is humanly possible whilst retaining some semblance of an internet connection for work...

Salmon is the priority, hence rivers preferred. Most salmon rivers will hold more than enough trout to keep me happy.

Where are you thinking?

Take a look around the Inverness area, minutes to remoteness and close to the new city of Inverness for all your needs and excursions.
Rivers galore and Lochs of wild fish and prime stillwaters should you feel a change.
Plenty of history and spey, findhorn,Ness to name a few.

Well, thing is, Scotland is so diverse and practically everywhere has something going for it. The more rquirements you throw into the equation though, the harder it gets. I'd hate to have to make the choice! With your criteria though, I'd be hard-pushed to suggest anywhere better than Skye....

There's plenty to go at, both for Salmon and Trout. As you probably know, the place is peppered with with Lochs of various sizes - The Storr Lochs being the most famous, and arguably the most stunning backdrop in the whole of Scotalnd.

The Storr's get a mayfly hatch too. The vast majority of the wild trouting on the island is available for a song. If walking and climbing, or walking/climbing and fishing while yer at it come into the equation, then where better? Skye will keep you busy for a lifetime....with some of the most celebrated and awe-inspiring areas in the whole of Scotalnd - Storr area, Quirang, Cuillins, to mention a few.

But you still have to get there/here.
I think other than fishing (there is loads of it most places up here) the time from your current front door to you bolt hole will make all the difference.
So you have just worked a long week and on Friday night you decide you want away, 3 or 4 hours might just be tolerable, will 8 or 10 hours traveling be on the cards?
