Default life jackets

hi was wondering if anybody knows the best type of life jackets to get and where to get them, need it for boat fishing on reservoirs and also for fishing rivers, need to get one as our club has told us that we need to wear them now if we want to fish from a boat,

thinking better safe than sorry

many thanks

If is just to comply with the health and safety regulations go for one which is termed buoyancy aid rather than life jacket.
Will be lighter and more compact.
Unless you seriously expect to fall in from boat dont get one with gas bottle inflation. They can and sometimes do inflate when receptor gets wet in heavy rainstorm!, or accidental wetting like leaning into water when releasing fish! bottles aint cheap to replace, often nearly the cost of the life vest in first place!
Bouyancy aids are generally made of floatant materials and designed to keep head above water, and comply with inshore fishery regulations.

Me and my mate ordered a Parmaris 150N Ergo High Fit Automatic Lifejacket from Marine Supplies Direct for a total of £88.98 with free delivery.

Didn't think I'd like wearing a lifejacket but you don't really notice it. I also thought it was better paying an extra couple of quid for an automatic one.

Unless you value your life very cheaply indeed - please make certain that whatever you get is a) CE approved b)150 Newtons min .
And don't forget to wear it outside all clothing - if it fires off under your waterproof coat it just might save you from drowning by throttling you first !

I understand from pals on the Staff at Rutland that too many fishermen are acquiring free ones - if you get the drift !

And if you are prone to fitting ( as in Grand Mal ) make sure it's an auto !

And it really was me that came up with the woeful comment ' Drowned customers cease to buy ! '

Keep breathing air

It's the same story at the Lake of Menteith.

Top question - "What do I do AFTER I fall in?"
If the answer is "I climb back aboard" - I choose a foam floatation buoyancy aid.

If the answer is "I get rescued by ...." - the 150 Newton gas job is my choice.

I own both types.

For either type - try a swim - the result may surprise you.

For gas types:
Don't buy a gas inflated life jacket without getting AT LEAST two spare gas bottles (and the triggers if needed).
Learn how to inflate the thing - Without using the gas cyl.
Learn how to deflate it - without using a knife.

I have been sailing on cruising boats for years and have settled on gas inflated manually operated lifejackets unless required to use automatics. Unless you are knocked unconscious which is a real risk on a sailing boat but not really likely on a fishing dinghy, triggering them is no problem and the buoyancy in your clothing and the jacket will keep you up long enough.

It always amazes me how many anglers don't use a lifejacket in a dinghy, perhaps they think it is cissy?. Having completed the RYA sea survival course and having lost two friends in a dinghy accident when they were going back to their yacht in a tender I never go out fishing without a lifejacket.
