Default ORVIS v SAGE 9' 5wt

I'm just comparing a couple of rods and wondered what the general census is on them both. I know I will have to go and cast them both before buying, but what's the general perception of manufacturer and rods. The two I'm looking at are both the 9' 5wt

Orvis ZG Helios™ 905-4 Tip Flex 9.5
Sage 590-4 Z-AXIS

Good choice or not??

Cheers Paul

What are you proposing to use them for? That will allow people to give them a fairer comparison.

I'll need to be able to use it for still water, small/med lakes, and medium rivers on the dry fly.

I've tried both, and they have their relative merits. The Orvis suits my casting and I prefer it's action when playing fish, but that's my personal preference. Try both if you can, and then make a personal choice as to which suits you best.

It's only my opinion, I fish with sage, I had an Orvis once, nice rod, but for all round fishing, especially the fishing you wish to do, Sage every time but as already mentioned try both before you commit yourself.......

Default sage

Had them both mate ,if you want to fish dries go for the sage, the helios 5 weight tip flex is a casting tool being very fast and a bit too much for river dries with light tippets, the z axis is a good bit more soft towards the tip, i had a few guys try the helios at the casting club and they struggled with it as their casting wasnt that great and good timing is required as it is not very forgiving with bad casts

Anything wrong with British rods - Harrison does an excellent 4 piece 9' AFTM 5# light and subtly fast .

Mind you , you won't be able to brag too mcuh about the price you paid to the uninitiated - £200 all up and delivered !

Don't get conned too much

Best wishes

Interesting comment Steve. I've got 5 Harrison rods for my Barbel fishing, they're fantastic rods, but as any rod, only as good as the guy building them. Is there someone in the UK you would recommend?
Cheers
Paul
