Default best flys for chub

hi as above i had a litte dabble down the river after some chub yesterday. I had tryed a few diffrent flys PTN,s hares ears, montanas, daddy long legs, and a few olive duns. i tryed these on diffrent hook sizes and also waited. i had used a 5ft tippet as the river is 5ft at its deepest on the stretch i was fishing. all i had all day was one run on a waited hares ear that got off so i dont no what it was any help on the flys to use and how to fish them dont mean to sound thick but i have only fished in still waters for trout

thanks rich

As for dry flies try a black beetle or a large Grey Wulff

Hiya Clabby,

Are you confusing a tippet with the leader as a whole? A tippet of a couple of feet is alright on a leader of 9 or more feet. I use a leader of 9 to 16 ft or rarely even more, depending upon the size and speed/turbulence of the river I am fishing.

If the water depth is 5ft you will want a leader of about 15ft, maybe tied with flourocarbon to help get your weighted nymphs down to the right depth (assuming you want to be close to the bottom). You'll never get a vertical drop to the fly, especially as the water in the top of the middle of the river is faster flowing than the water at the bottom and edges. Try fishing the duo sometime and watch how the nypmh will trail quite high in the water behind the damp/dry fly it is suspended from so that a 3ft drop will give you a fishing depth of around a foot.

And the Gray Wolff is well covered via Google - look here, for example. An Adams would do nicely as well as a general dry search pattern, it looks very similair to the Wolff. or a nice wee black number or griffiths Gnat.

Good luck with it,

Andy

Chub flies which work very well for me are woolly ******, appetizer, chernobyl ant and hoppers. All of these are hot weather patterns as I find a large lump of cheesepaste much more effective when it's cold....
