Rich,

Yeovil is in a bit of a desert when it comes to good cheap trout rivers.

Google "River Frome fishing" and you will find all you need to know about the Frome, including Maiden Newton. Whether you could call most of the stuff you will find cheap is another matter... The Dorchester club water always looks like the best VFM on the Frome but I've never fished any of it.

The head waters of nearly all the Somerset level's rivers (even the Yeo!!!)have some trout and all of them can be fished for peanuts. None of them are stuffed with trout and much of the water doesn't look like a trout stream but they are there all the same. The upper reaches of the Brue are well worth a look.

Or, if you want a proper babbling brook go the Dulverton and fish the Dulverton AA waters on the Little Exe, Barle and Haddeo - £25/year.

I fish a few rivers in Dorset buckshee :-) One, is arguably the finest untouched chalkstream in the country where 2-3 totally wild 2lb brownies can be caught in a 1hr session. However due to the fact is it totally un-managed (and totally wild) it's only practical to fish during the winter, spring and early summer before the vegetation takes over. It has a fantastic Mayfly hatch and the phrase "Duffers Fortnight" may well have been used to describe this stream.

The other river I fish is the Stour which has a few trout but where they lack numbers they make up of it in size! I have caught fish to 3.5lb and know of 2 fish I'd estimate at around 5lb. There is also a good stock of Grayling, Dace and Chub to keep your rod bending! There are also a few Sea Trout and I was chatting with a guy a couple of months ago who said that he'd seen a couple of Salmon last winter spawning?

Both these waters are free and between 1/2 - 3/4 miles in length. PM me if you want details...

There is also free fishing on the Hampshire Avon north of Salisbury... Free Fishing|Places|No Day Ticket|UK|Pike|Carp|Coarse|Game|Dofreefishing.com|Advertising|UK Directory of free fishing

Clubs that have fishing on the Stour are Wimbourn AC and Blandford AC. I believe both charge in the region of £80-120 per year for membership. As well as trout the Stour has some monster Pike and Perch, both of which I'm gonna have a go for this winter.

Salisbury club have a long stretch of the Stour at Wimborne and a season ticket for that (and all the other mixed fisheries including the Avon and Nadder in and around Salisbury) was £79 this year. I've had trout to 2lb, perch to 3lb and some lovely pike from those stretches of the stour.

Closer to yeovil though, try the upper reaches of the river Parrett:
Where to Fish Directory: Stoke Sub Hamdon & District A.A. (River | Get Hooked)

or the other upper reaches of the Somerset rivers.

Plenty of rivers about, you just need to explore and ask questions.
