Default Fly Suppliers

Hi all, I'm just starting out, and need some advice on what selection of flies I'll need to get me going, and where to get them from?
Do I need to go to a 'designer' Fly Dresser, or are the run of the mill ones you can buy on Fleebay good enough? I'd rather spend the extra money on quality if they're going to improve my chances of catching!
Through the winter months, I plan to fish small to medium lakes, then move on to the rivers and streams in the spring and summer.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Paul

A few basic lures, tadpoles, tadpoles with beads, and some nymphs like Diawl Bach,Hares ears will easilly get you throgh the winter. and over the winter you can get more info from here, possibly using the search function.

The Essential Fly.co.uk has them on sale. I would bet they are "factory" made, Ok if your just going after them tree trout.

Best to try and find a local shop and get a relationship established while your learning. There are several guys on here that do some selling of quality flies. Good luck

There are good and bad suppliers on ebay, just as there are good and bad shops. I recently bought some from

gja7281 items - Get great deals on Sporting Goods items on eBay UK!

for my son and they were really well tied. What you dont want are flies that fall apart after two casts. I bought some from a well know shop and many of them did just that. You are going to need a fair selection for that range of fishing, consider buying wets, dries, buzzers & some lures.

Too true!

For your winter selection, Paul, take a look at some of Martyn Williams flies, which have always been excellent for me. True, they may not be the cheapest, but they are excellent quality and you can tell he really thinks about and tests his flies out before selling them if you take a look at his descriptions on the items.

Hi there
I too am quite new to this sport. However, I had a lesson with a guy called john Bond at Dever springs (he is an excellent teacher for beginner fishermen and I would recommend anyone new to fishing has a lesson with him - happy to supply contact details if you send me a personal email).

Anyway he recommended fulling mill flies. if you google them you will find a list of suppliers. They are not cheap but seem very good quality.

hope that helps

Try some of the Fly Tyers on this Forum. You get superb flies which don't fall to bits and they do catch fish.

The following are my own choice

Buzz
John Tyzack
Spiders Plus.

There are others who also have a very good rep. but those are the Guys I use.

Best advice you'll ever get......if it's quality that you're after then this is the route you need to go down. Not that much more expensive but guaranteed quality.

I'd personally recomend Captain Scarlet on here.....look him up in the members section or PM me if you need help contacting him.

He's an England Interantional......say no more!

FastMail Tackle

Great flies at a great price for starters like me, I bought a load of sets to get me up and running then further selections as the seasons have changed.

Uber fast delivery, often despatched same day
