Default Duo Flies

Hello all looking for some advise on increasing your catch rate on your dry fly when fishing Duo style .I did a lot of Duo fishing the season just past & boy it is very effective .I used several different dry patterns Balloon Caddis Klinkhammers & the mighty Cdc & Elk.I found that i would get a few trout when using the Balloon Caddis & Klinkhammers but when using the Cdc & elk my catch rate to the dry would explode even overtaking the trout caught on the nymph some days. The down side i found with the Cdc & Elk was i couldn't really use a tungsten nymph with a bead larger than 2.5 mil before it got pulled under also found the Cdc & elk hard to see on the water sometimes .I am thinking about tying a few larger & bulkier Cdc & elks with some high vis yarn added on top of the wing for visibility. How big does others tie there Cdc & elk flies & how bulky also does big & bulky mean there going to catch less trout anyway. On another observation i cant understand when experimenting with dry flies. On a few occasions i fished with two dry flies a Cdc & Elk & a Balloon Caddis the Cdc & elk out fished the Balloon at least 2-1 even swapped there position on the cast. But the thing was it wasn't a normal Balloon caddis it was tied like a Cdc & elk with Cdc body the only difference being the foam Balloon head. Cheers

On days when the ctach rate on the dry is higher than the nymph just cut the nymph off! Wou will get better presentation of the dry then and the catch rate may well increase even more and everyone knows dry fly fishing is more fun lol!

I can only offer advice based on the small river i mainly fish. It is a mixture of shallow riffles up to 1ft, some rapids up to 1.5 ft, and glides of varying depth and speed, usually 1ft-3ft deep.

I usually fish the duo, with just 1ft to the weighted nymph. I never go over 2mm for tungsten beads. If i want a larger bead, up to 3mm, i use copper coloured brass beads, or I colour gold beads with letraset/pantone markers to tone them down a bit. I have watched trout swerve away from gold bead nymphs! I also use glass bead head nymphs, but for a different 'duo' method.

Because the riffles and rapids are shallow, the nymph does not have very far to sink. To much weight leads to hookups on stones and weed.
Because the glides are slowish, the nymph sinks quickly anyway, as it isn't being dragged at speed by the dry.

The point i am trying to make, is that you may not need to use tungsten beads above 2.5 mm if the river you fish can be fished effectively with lighter weighted nymphs.

If you do need to suspend heavier nymphs, then maybe the bung or a booby cord post, heavily hackled klink is the solution.

Some one else may suggest shorter drifts (till the dry sinks)/more casts with the CDC/elk.
