I can only offer advice based on the small river i mainly fish. It is a mixture of shallow riffles up to 1ft, some rapids up to 1.5 ft, and glides of varying depth and speed, usually 1ft-3ft deep.
I usually fish the duo, with just 1ft to the weighted nymph. I never go over 2mm for tungsten beads. If i want a larger bead, up to 3mm, i use copper coloured brass beads, or I colour gold beads with letraset/pantone markers to tone them down a bit. I have watched trout swerve away from gold bead nymphs! I also use glass bead head nymphs, but for a different 'duo' method.
Because the riffles and rapids are shallow, the nymph does not have very far to sink. To much weight leads to hookups on stones and weed.
Because the glides are slowish, the nymph sinks quickly anyway, as it isn't being dragged at speed by the dry.
The point i am trying to make, is that you may not need to use tungsten beads above 2.5 mm if the river you fish can be fished effectively with lighter weighted nymphs.
If you do need to suspend heavier nymphs, then maybe the bung or a booby cord post, heavily hackled klink is the solution.
Some one else may suggest shorter drifts (till the dry sinks)/more casts with the CDC/elk.
