Default Rod length

Supposing you have decided on the rod casting weight say 6#, what then do you consider to choose the correct length? between 9` 9`6" or even 10` ?

Might just be me, but I think you might want to re-word that one mate. Not making alot of sense to me.

All depends on what you are fishing ie stillwater, small river, large river, for my stillwater fishing and large river i use a 10ft and for small river i use an 8ft 6in,or even shorter it depends whats on the banks of the river. No good waving a 10ft around when on casting you are ending up in the trees with the rod so it is as they say "horses for courses".

9' to 9'6" from bank.
10' from boat.
If only one length to be bought has to be 10', then you can fish all!!

Rod length is subjective according to your personal preference and what you are going to do with the rod, ie. the type of fishing... both have pro's and con's. From a casting viewpoint, if you can cast one, you will be able to cast the other. If you cant cast the one, you won't be able to cast the other one either, so perhaps you should see if you can try both lengths, and see for yourself.

Yep, apologies.... guilty as charged. Makes complete sense now, reading it again a day later. Must have had a mental block... a bit like you with the complexities of choosing a suitable rod length.

More precise information would be helpful. What are you fishing for, how big are the waters, what conditions do you want the rod to perform well in, and what compromises are you prepared to make?

When you say, "Supposing you have decided on the rod casting weight say 6#,. . . "

Is it definitely a 6 wt and only a 6 wt you're asking about? Or are you looking for more general opinions on a variety of rod weights? Adding "say" in the middle suggests you're just picking that weight out of the air for the sake of discussion. It matters because obviously the principles that guide rod length for a #4 are totally different from the principles for a #7.

it's not about how big it is, it's what you do with it

I have decided its the 6# I want but I was wondering what considerations anglers take into account when they decide on the length, Iv heard lots of opinions but they seem based on personal preference and nothing in particular.
