Default Most successful dry fly pattern this season?

Just wondered what has worked best for you this year. By far my most successful dry fly has been my version of the "JT Olive" which I have fished with all season. A couple of weeks ago I put up a post about my last day on the Wharfe this year, and how great it had been. Most of those fish were taken on that JT Olive. One poster remarked what a good fly that was, but had I tried the CDC and Elk?

So I tied some of those up, fully expecting them to get their first outing next season. But lo and behold this Sunday the weather was so nice that I thought "....just one more...." and went out on the Wharfe again to try out the CDC and Elk batch I had tied.

Well, I fished exclusively with this pattern and took 12 fish between 9.30 and 1.30, when I finally packed in for the day (and season, again!). One fish was a 14" beauty too.

So now I can't wait for next season. Two great patterns.

What has been your most succesful dry fly pattern this season?

Cheers
Stuart

It's supposed to be a May Fly imitation, I think.

I don't do much dry fly fishing on Rivers but, when I do, I find that JT Olive is deadly. My problem is keeping it afloat for more than two or three casts.

I use it dry - on medium flowing water - has pulled the larger fish of the season. I've just decked myself in with Corrib Greys which, judging by what is flying around, should work even better.

For me, on the tumbling, mountain streams, it's been the CDC and Elk but on occasions when some degree of subtlety has been required I've delved into a box of Garethl's 'dust' flies that I aquired at the Monnow Social. The olive biot dun in sizes 22 / 24 has been startlingly good and the use of these and smaller flies this season has been a real learning point for me ... old dog, new tricks!

royvs> I don't have that trouble with the JT Olive except when it has caught a fish. Then no matter how much frogs f*nny I put on it, it's useless and sinks. But up to that point it seems to float forever, even without ff...

I really struggle to pick just one.
For number of big fish my Olive emerger.
For just the number of fish a yellowish biot parachute (GarethL pattern).
My biggest fish of the season was taken on my bread and butter.
My best searching pattern was a high viz parachute adams.
The most fun was was tossing Wyatts DHE into fast water and watching fish turn and chase.
The hardest fish were won on a a totty cdc and mole thing with a split tail (Jeremy Lucus).

Last edited by Buzz; 13-10-2010 at 07:30 PM. Reason: Adding credit to Garethl for biot parachute and J lucus for the mole thing
