Default River Eden next spring

My fishing buddy and I have decided that salmon fishing is a mugs game, so for our annual trip next year, rather than traipsing all the way up to Aberdeenshire to spend a few very expensive days practising spey casting, we would like to go trouting instead. I fancy trying Cumbria. Looking on the internet there are a couple of attractive looking spots, the Black Swan at Culgaith and the Tufton Arms at Appleby which look as if they have good grub and can offer good fishing. Has anyone got any experience of these places, good or bad?

Stayed at the Tufton Arms last year, good food but our room overlooked the Market Square on a Thursday night and the pub opposite didn't close till 2.00am with most of the clientelle drinking outside until then. Didn't get much sleep, ask for a room at the back!

Can thoroughly recommend Temple Sowerby House at Temple Sowerby (obviously)

Regards

peter

The Black Swan is a lovely pub and serves a really good meal - locally renowned. The fishing will be excellent. I maintain that the Eden is one of the country's very best trout rivers.

Some years ago, I stayed in The Sandford Arms near Appleby. At that time they had access to the river, possibly even their own stretch and provided me with day tickets for other reaches. Not sure if this is still the case, but it is (was?) a nice quiet inn with good food and accommodation in a rural location.

I would perhaps avoid Appleby in June........

Otherwise a very sound plan.

In case you're interested, I understand the Black swan is being sold, and we were informed that the new owners are likely to be doing pub/restaurant only and not B&B

Again.
Plenty of local hotels/B&B's arund the area TT, do a google.
I nearly bought the Black Swan many years ago, when Whitbread were selling pubs off.
It consists of three houses and would have easily knocked back into three seperate dwellings.
My offer of £76,000 was accepted, but after a few visits for a drink in the bar, covertly, we soon realised the locals would have hung drawn and quartered us if we had closed the pub down.
So we pulled out.
