Default who owns the rights.

Hi everyone,
There is this little stetch of river near saighton in cheshire. It has a public footpath running along side. I was wondering who would own the rights, It looks like it could hold some pike and perch.

Thanks for any help.

John.

I'd start by making inquiries as to who the landowner is John. Whether it has a public footpath or not isn't going to be any kind of indicator as to whether you can fish it. Does the land hold stock, arable, woodland etc? Once you find the landowner he/she will be able to tell you whether they hold the fishing rights or if they are leased to a club.

Sorry to go off track here but I haven't been river fishing. My dad knows a guy who owns some land beside a river, however nobody has ever fished in it at his section. So would I be right in saying the person who owns the land at the side of the river own half of the river on that side?

Thanks

Just because he owns the land does not mean that he owns the fishing rights, you will have to check with the landowner. Fishing rights can be bought and sold as a separate entity.
