Default How much tackle do you own

This may be an off the wall sort of question, - Im very much new to fly fishing, but in my years of course fishing, carp fishing, sea fishing, I seem to always take too much tackle to wherever I go fishing.
Obviously when you go fly fishing, everything is to hand, ie 1 rod and reel, and all accessory's in either your waist coat or trout bag, but its never a load of tackle that's needed in fly fishing, but do people own loads of fly gear, ie rods and reels and if so why, when only one rod and reel is used.

Same reason I have a match rod for light float fishing and an Avon rod for heavy float fishing and quivertip rods, spinning rods, rods for tench fishing with alarms and bobbins, centrepins, closed and open face fixed spools, etc. I only have two fly rods, a light 8 foot 3/4 weight for fishing streams and small stillwaters and a 9'6 6/7 weight for reservoirs and other larger waters. Just different tools for different jobs, and I would happily add other more specialised fly outfits for specific styles of fishing.

Well you see you need a small brook rod, a small river rod, a medium river rod, a large river rod, a sea-trout rod, a grilse rod, a salmon single handed and double handed, a worming rod, a small resevoir rod, a large stillwater rod, a boat rod, a dapping rod and a few spare just in case. Depending on where you are going to fish you have the rod for the occasion and take whichever. All rods need matching reels and lines don't forget. I've probably forgot a few...

I bet your eye sight is shot to hell. Grip like a vice though

Had all the gear for coarse, sea and game over the years.
Sold 99% of my coarse gear, just a centre pin and match rod for the grayling left.
All the sea gear went.
Now I fish with less and less gear every year. Waistcoat and one rod/ reel with a spare spool just about covers it.
Still seem to have loads and loads and loads of flies though

If some of the tackle "TARTS" on this forum listed all the tackle they own??

They would have a 500, page Novel, written on the forum! Don't think Admin, would be pleased!

We are talking about "Fishing T.A.C.K.L.E"

Mostyn how can you talk of the tackle tarts, on this thread and be calling out for a hardy demon on another and a battenkill on a futher thread.
Is tart defined as someone with more than you?

Me i have 15' salmon, 9'6 6wt seatrout, 9' 4 wt all rounder, 7'10 ultra light, and four or five short split canes and greenhearts of which the 6' Greenheart is my favorite. ( Watch the slagging off begin for that admision)
And i have a reel to match each rod .... and some.

However when I go down the river i have one rod and reel and what fits in my pockets and my lanyard.
I cant abide carrying baskets full of stuff.

The question being asked, is one that has appeared on every fishing forum at some stage. I think it might be difficult for some of the people who have accumulated a lot of tackle over many years. I personally don't think it has anything to do with how much tackle you actually need. After all we don't actually need to fly fish at all, and if that is the reality, we don't need any tackle at all. It's more about, what we want, and what we as individuals believe is going to enhance the pursuit that brings us so much pleasure. part of the pleasure for me, is all the stuff that I have accumulated over the years, and haven't got the heart to get rid of. Much of it does not get used anymore, but somewhere in the distant past, it might have had a significant role to play, in enriching my experience of this marvelous game. At the tender age of fifty, where I find myself now, and having flyfished for more than thirty five years, you can be sure that there is a lot of equipment stuck away in the "hardware archive" that is purely justified on the basis that it part of my own personal history.
I have never sold any of my past rods or reels, but I have given away many. Even my most expensive equipment, I do not view as a financial investment, but more as an investment in my own satisfaction, in knowing that, after all these years of sacrifice and and hard work, I find myself in a position where I am able to fully justify a little indulgence that feeds my very personal sense of deserving, to the point where I have accumulated a collection of high end fly fishing eqipment, that would make a small dealer jealous. Call it what you like, tackle tartiness, bling bunnyness, or whatever, but to me, every piece of equipment that I have has some meaning, if only to me, and I am happy with that. Another point that i have to mention, is that I cannot remember being able to "justify" any purchase I have ever made, and have given up trying. Now, when I buy something, regardless of the price I might have to pay for it, i do so because i want to, and I can. It's as simple as that.
For what it's worth, I like Sage, Greys, Abel, Simms, Renzetti, and a few other brands. Do I need them, of course I do, they make me happy. Do they make me fish better? probably not, but that's my problem.

owning and using are the key words
I like many probably have far far too much gear with 90% of it gathering
dust.
I tend to use 4 outfits very regulary
wee river greys grxi 7ft6 3/4 with g series reel
bigger rivers scierra ferrox 9ft 5wt and battenkill reel
loch sage xp 10 7wt/ with hardy ultralight reel
sea trout/grilse grxi 11 ft 7wt with speedex reel
My rule on the river being net excluded if it dosnt fit in my wader/jacket pockets it doesnt go. I like to travel light

the above covers me all season and most seasons. The rest has been impulse
buys or "bargins" i could not resist, some of it used once or twice.........still rather nice having it though...............just in case!!!
