From my limited experience of fishing them, they are big dour waters. The water is very deep and as a result remains cold until later on in the season and Ness has a micro climate that can cause very strong winds when elsewhere is calm.

You can troll the lochs and Ness has a good head of salmon (best with lead core line or spinners).

Personally I would focus on some of the hill lochs in the area, Glen Morriston lochs, or loads of lovely salmon rivers; Morriston, Ness, Lochy.

The great glen route is great fun in a canoe but don't expect thick and fast sport.

I've fished Loch Lochy from the shore several times over the last 20 years the big advantage being that its free! but I've never fished before mid May.
April could be a bit early depending on what sort of winter we get but I've had success on Black Pennel, Butchers, Kate McLaren and black and blue Zulus.

I found the best areas on Lochy to be on the shore opposite the main road accessed by minor road then forestry type tracks. There are some deep drop offs so wade with care. If you have access to boat fishing so much the better, just be careful if the wind gets up, Lochy is a big loch and can get rough.

I've never fished on Loch Ness and the only success I've had on Loch Oich was catching jack pike on spinning tackle.

If you can get a rod on the River Moriston in April you may do well as it is classed as an early salmon river.

As already stated these lochs are very dour at that time of year. Would be better if you could wait till a little later in the year.
Oich is very wooded along most of the shore so a boat would be best. If not just fish the bits you can from the shore. Well worth having a go for the pike as well on fly, there are plenty in here.
You could also try L. Lundie above Invergarry. Full of lots of free rising brownies, a nice walk up the hill and you can almost be sure not to meet another soul.

There are good trout in the canal.and the canal basins. No rod license is required in Scotland.and I doubt very much if you will be asked for a permit on the canal.Loch Lochy is free.

Try Loch Lundavra near Fort William.

Beware of the downwind end of Loch Ness if the wind is above a force three - this can be a very rough piece of water.
