Default Leader Rings?

Does anyone use these for tying droppers?

I'm considering these to save me some fluro.

TIA, Gary

Default mini rings for droppers etc

Hello Gary

Useful for a number of applications.Carp fishers also use them although slightly larger but not shiny.

One word of caution.I now use Riverge Leader Rings or Carp Fishing version which come from a friend who has Gardner Tackle who I think supply the trade with various gismos.I had some previously from another supplier which had an edge and cut the tippet.I had tied these rings into a dry fly and could not make out the problem and thought at first it was a tippet issue.Closer inspection revealed the truth.

Best JP

I was fishing with a mate the other day and he had some of these leader rings. I'd never seen them before, but i have to say they look c**p. You're better off keeping it simple and using a water knot. You're hardly wasting that much fluro are you?

Well, when you tie a dropper and have a few fly changes through the day, the dropper length is obviously decreased beyond use. I won't just tie another dropper on (too many knots) so thought using a ring would allow fluro to be added as required, using only a few inch at a time.

How about tying a dropper loop into the mainline and using that to attac dropers too.

I use a single riverge leader ring on the end of my poly leaders to increase their lifespan. Just cut off the loop on the end, tie on the ring securely, i add a drop of superglue to make sure the knot won't slip as its going to be there for some time. Replace the polyleader a couple of times a season, I also check the knot strength each time I set up with a firm pull to make sure its still well intact.

That said I would not use them for droppers, too messy with 3 knots around the ring. Just use a water knot, if it gets too short cut it off close to the leader and tie on a new one.

Gary, once your dropper gets too short, cut the water knot out and tie the two pieces of leader back together with a water knot, leaving the downward facing off-cut long enough to be your new dropper. Job done, no waste. Added benefit, you can make your leader tapered, with the first section being lets say 8lb, then next 6lb, then next 4lb.

These are useful. I use them when fishing streamers on a sink tip line with a short leader. I use when when fishing two nymphs, one heavy, one off the hook bend. I found when fishing a team of 3 wet flies - I've gone back to tying water knots - you end up with so many knots its not worth it.

There seems to be a mixed opinion here on these rings.

Stuartpengs: That was what I was considering but my leader length will still be decreased. Is there a way of tying on a new length of fluro for a dropper; after cutting the "used" one out? I'm using Riverge now (after being snapped constantly), so any savings are a benifit.

Silly question now: What's a polly leader?
